Book The Extraordinary Story of Mary Elmes

Download or read book The Extraordinary Story of Mary Elmes written by Paddy Butler and published by Orpen Press. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Elmes is the great unsung heroine of modern Ireland. Risking her life to save Jewish children during the Holocaust, she turned her back on a promising academic career to help others. She is the only Irish person to be honoured as Righteous Among the Nations by Israel for this work. In 1937 she travelled to Spain as an aid worker, where she ran children’s hospitals, moving from one bombed-out building to the next in the midst of a horrific civil war. Moving to France after Franco’s victory, she continued to work in the wretched refugee camps hastily thrown together by the French authorities for 500,000 escaping Spanish Republicans. Soon, Jews fleeing the Nazis were also imprisoned in the internment camps. Mary initially sought to relieve the suffering of all the inmates but when the deportations to the east began she worked to save hundreds of Jewish children from the death camps, going so far as to smuggle children out of the camp in her own car. Eventually her actions came to the notice of the collaborationist Vichy government and in 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo and jailed for six months. The Extraordinary Story of Mary Elmes tells the gripping story of one woman’s heroism during two of the twentieth century’s bloodiest conflicts. It includes a number of interviews with some of those who owe their lives to Mary Elmes, as well as photographs and a wealth of archival material.

He spent fifteen years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Today, as a husband and father, life is wonderfully ordinary, but the memory of his ordeal lives on. Here, for the first time and with unflinching candour, he lays bare the experiences of those years and their aftermath. Life after Life is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of forgiveness. It reminds us of the privilege of freedom, and how the balm of love, family and everyday life can restore us and mend the scars of even the most savage injustice. 'This book captures the sweet soul of Paddy. Beautifully written. For lovers of freedom everywhere.' Jim Sheridan

Book excerpt: Paddy Doherty, a young English twenty-something, has loved motorbikes for as long as he could remember, almost as long as his best pal, “Mucka” O’Neal. But a chance conversation over a pint, on a sunny summer’s afternoon, buys him a one-way ticket into the insane world of motorcycle racing. Stoically partnered by “Mucka”, the pair embark on an adventure into the adrenaline-packed life of motorcycle racers. Rivalry, romance, disaster and success pave the track of this gritty, earthy, humorous adventure around the motor-racing circuits of the UK. From the cold winter’s morning of their nervous first race at Mallory Park, the racers progress through the ranks, making colourful friends, and dangerous enemies along the way. Paddock parties, crashes, tears and above all, laughter run rich throughout this genuinely funny and heartfelt adventure. But how will it end for them, on a podium with champagne, or in a hospital bed? The Racers unfolds in a climax of burnt rubber, all the way to the chequered flag.

Book excerpt: After a coal mine explosion kills her father in 1922, pretty little Mary Margaret “Mame” Blackwell is not willing to accept her mother’s hardscrabble plan for farming burley tobacco in rural West Virginia, but trying to survive in a nearly deserted coal mining town without a father in the early 1900s is anything but easy. Mame yearns for a way out of the sleepy little town of Beckley. When Mame eagerly leaves home on her first trip to Charleston at age 19, she meets tobacco heir Clint Paddington and sees her chance to move up in the world. Unaware at first of their families’ shared connection to tragedy, Mame makes wild, naïve choices that expose both families to even deeper dangers for generations to come. Watch the damage escalate in this gritty Southern saga as ambition and romance go awry, adding betrayal, kidnapping, rape, and even murder to the mining tragedy. Do children inherit the sins of their fathers? Do dark forces walk the earth? Will Mame’s secrets push her to madness? Or will her solid roots in the coal mining country help her survive her mistakes, or, at least, be forgiven of them?
