Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Roman centurion asks Jesus to heal his dying servant. Jesus agrees to help and begins making his way to the centurion's home, but the centurion tells him not to bother making the trip. He says that it would be enough for Jesus just to say the word for the servant to be healed. The Bible then says that Jesus "marveled" at the centurion's faith. How could Jesus, whom Christians believe to be God incarnate, who knows all things, be amazed by anything a human does? There must be something special about faith to cause Jesus to be amazed. Christians are called to possess the same kind of faith as the centurion. It may not seem possible, but if we want it, God helps us obtain and maintain the kind of faith that can amaze even God himself. And once we have that amazing faith, it will lead us to share joy, hope, and love with others around us.

What followed over many months was a desire to get to know the Jesus who had changed his life, but in a much fuller and richer way--now! From then on, on scraps of folded paper in his pockets, Eastman found himself recording adjectives describing the nature and character of Jesus Christ, expanding them later into a personal devotional journal. Reflecting Eastman's spiritual journey, this book of insights will challenge you to see Jesus as you may never have seen him before. Eastman's approach to studying the nature and names of Jesus will bring you closer to your Savior. Each day of this enriching 31-day resource consists of Scripture, a short exposition, insights from Christian leaders, a prayer, and a practical application to help deepen your faith. Book The Awesome Mercy of God

Download or read book The Awesome Mercy of God written by John H. Hampsch and published by Servant Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mercy of God is mentioned directly in the Bible in more than 400 places. It is mentioned indirectly in hundreds more, from parables to prayers. Too often, though, we fail to acknowledge God's enduring mercy. Sometimes this is because we are confused or depressed; sometimes because we fear our sins have placed us beyond his reach. Fr. Hampsch tells us, The world's worst sinner can be forgiven in a fraction of a second by simply saying to the Lord, with true sincerity, 'I'm sorry.' No matter what our situation--whether we are feeling burdened by sin, enduring temptation, coping with illness, or struggling with doubt--God's healing love is as near as the air we breathe. With lively stories and inspiring meditations on Scripture, Fr. Hampsch reveals the good news that God stands by our side, persistently offering his mercy.

  • ISBN : 0829438939
  • Pages : 143 pages

Download or read book Mercy in the City written by Kerry Weber and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2014-01-08 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jesus asked us to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, and visit the imprisoned, he didn’t mean it literally, right? Kerry Weber, a modern, young, single woman in New York City sets out to see if she can practice the Corporal Works of Mercy in an authentic, personal, meaningful manner while maintaining a full, robust, regular life. Weber, a lay Catholic, explores the Works of Mercy in the real world, with a gut-level honesty and transparency that people of urban, country, and suburban locales alike can relate to. Mercy in the City is for anyone who is struggling to live in a meaningful, merciful way amid the pressures of “real life.” For those who feel they are already overscheduled and too busy, for those who assume that they are not “religious enough” to practice the Works of Mercy, for those who worry that they are alone in their efforts to live an authentic life, Mercy in the City proves that by living as people for others, we learn to connect as people of faith.

Book At the Mercy of Their Clothes

Download or read book At the Mercy of Their Clothes written by Celia Marshik and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In much of modern fiction, it is the clothes that make the character. Garments embody personal and national histories. They convey wealth, status, aspiration, and morality (or a lack thereof). They suggest where characters have been and where they might be headed, as well as whether or not they are aware of their fate. At the Mercy of Their Clothes explores the agency of fashion in modern literature, its reflection of new relations between people and things, and its embodiment of a rapidly changing society confronted by war and cultural and economic upheaval. In some cases, people need garments to realize themselves. In other cases, the clothes control the person who wears them. Celia Marshik's study combines close readings of modernist and middlebrow works, a history of Britain in the early twentieth century, and the insights of thing theory. She focuses on four distinct categories of modern clothing: the evening gown, the mackintosh, the fancy dress costume, and secondhand attire. In their use of these clothes, we see authors negotiate shifting gender roles, weigh the value of individuality during national conflict, work through mortality, and depict changing class structures. Marshik's dynamic comparisons put Ulysses in conversation with Rebecca, Punch cartoons, articles in Vogue, and letters from consumers, illuminating opinions about specific garments and a widespread anxiety that people were no more than what they wore. Throughout her readings, Marshik emphasizes the persistent animation of clothing—and objectification of individuals—in early-twentieth-century literature and society. She argues that while artists and intellectuals celebrated the ability of modern individuals to remake themselves, a range of literary works and popular publications points to a lingering anxiety about how political, social, and economic conditions continued to constrain the individual.
