Book Reflections on Female and Trans Masculinities and Other Queer Crossings

Download or read book Reflections on Female and Trans Masculinities and Other Queer Crossings written by Nina Kane and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays emerged out of the Agender conference, and various queer cultural activities associated with the PoMoGaze project (Leeds Art Gallery, 2013–2015). PoMoGaze was a term created to promote queer co-curatorial projects held at the gallery as part of Community Engagement activities, and references ‘PoMo’ as a shortening of ‘Postmodern’ combined with ‘Gaze’ as a play on words linking the act of looking with LGBT*IQ activities. The book presents many voices exploring themes of female and trans* masculinities, gender equality, and the lives, work and activism of LGBT*IQ artists and thinkers. It includes discussion of arts-making, cultural materials, diverse identities, contemporary queer politics, and social histories, and travels across time telling gender-crossing stories of creative resistance. Readers with an interest in the performing and visual arts, literature, philosophy, and queer and gendered cultural readings with an intersectional emphasis, will be stimulated by this eclectic and thought-provoking collection.

Book Forgotten Women The Artists

Download or read book Forgotten Women The Artists written by Zing Tsjeng and published by Cassell. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'To say this series is "empowering" doesn't do it justice. Buy a copy for your daughters, sisters, mums, aunts and nieces - just make sure you buy a copy for your sons, brothers, dads, uncles and nephews, too.' - Independent The women who shaped and were erased from our history. Forgotten Women is a new series of books that uncover the lost herstories of influential women who have refused over hundreds of years to accept the hand they've been dealt and, as a result, have formed, shaped and changed the course of our futures. The Artists brings together the stories of 48* brilliant woman artists who made huge yet unacknowledged contributions to the history of art, including Camille Claudel, the extraordinarily talented sculptor who was always unfairly overshadowed by her lover, Rodin; Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, who has been claimed as the true originator of Marcel Duchamp's Fountain; and Ana Mendieta, the Cuban refugee who approached violence against women through her performance art before her own untimely death. With chapters ranging from Figurative to Photography, and Craft to Conceptual, this is an alternative guide to art history that demonstrates the broad range of artistic movements that included, and were often pioneered by, female artists who have been largely overlooked. *The number of Nobel-prize-winning women.

Book Marlow Moss

Download or read book Marlow Moss written by Florette Dijkstra and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a biographical and artistic study of Marlow Moss (1890-1958), English constructivist. A history of her life and work is followed by a catalogue containing a complete survey of Moss's oeuvre. Using catalogue illustrations and the few works that have been included in public collections as her basis, and working on a scale of 1:2, Florette Dijkstra reconstructed Moss's paintings and reliefs, and later her objects and drawings. This enabled Djikstra to follow the steps that Moss took in her quest to express space, movement and light.

Book Marlow Moss A Forgotten Maverick

Download or read book Marlow Moss A Forgotten Maverick written by Marlow Moss and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2017 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British artist Marlow Moss (1889-1958) is one of the few early female Constructivists who inspired the great modernist masters. For instance, the so-called double line was one of her most important inventions, which she began employing in her paintings in 1930. It is one of the elements that both Piet Mondrian and Jean Gorin picked up on for their own neo-sculptural compositions. Even though they do not openly refer to her, their works are still closely related to Moss and they share her original, new ideas about art and composition. Unlike her contemporaries, Moss did not limit herself to painting. She applied her linear structures and mathematical principles to reliefs and sculptures as well. These aspects of her work, along with her unusual life, are discussed in detail in this exhibition catalogue.

Download or read book The Double written by James Meyer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking examination of the “double” in modern and contemporary art From ancient mythology to contemporary cinema, the motif of the double—which repeats, duplicates, mirrors, inverts, splits, and reenacts—has captured our imaginations, both attracting and repelling us. The Double examines this essential concept through the lens of art, from modernism to contemporary practice—from the paired paintings of Henri Matisse and Arshile Gorky, to the double line works of Piet Mondrian and Marlow Moss, to Eva Hesse’s One More Than One, Lorna Simpson’s Two Necklines, Roni Horn’s Pair Objects, and Rashid Johnson’s The New Negro Escapist Social and Athletic Club (Emmett). James Meyer’s survey text explores four modes of doubling: Seeing Double through repetition; Reversal, the inversion or mirroring of an image or form; Dilemma, the staging of an absurd or impossible choice; and the Divided and Doubled Self (split and shadowed selves, personae, fraternal doubles, and pairs). Thought-provoking essays by leading scholars Julia Bryan-Wilson, Tom Gunning, W.J.T. Mitchell, Hillel Schwartz, Shawn Michelle Smith, and Andrew Solomon discuss a host of topics, including the ontology and ethics of the double, the double and psychoanalysis, double consciousness, the doppelgänger in silent cinema, and the queer double. Richly illustrated throughout, The Double is a multifaceted exploration of an enduring theme in art, from painting and sculpture to photography, film, video, and performance.
