Book From Cromwell to Wellington

Download or read book From Cromwell to Wellington written by Spencer Wilkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Cromwell to Wellington: Twelve Soldiers The second name in the book is that of the Duke of Marlborough, to whom I should be inclined to assign the foremost place in the roll of British Commanders. His splendid military genius was united with an almost unparalleled evenness of temper, and a regard for, and sympathy with, his troops, which earned for him a devotion scarcely less than that which the Tenth Legion felt for Caesar, or the Old Guard for Napoleon. From a moralist's point of View, Marlborough's character was not faultless, but as a General he had few equals and no superior. He never fought a battle which he did not win, never besieged a city which he did not take, and, in spite of obstructive allies and jealous continental rivals, he curbed the aggression of France, and restored the balance of power in Europe. Book The Military Life of John Duke of Marlborough Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Military Life of John Duke of Marlborough Classic Reprint written by Archibald Alison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Military Life of John, Duke of Marlborough Consummate as were the abilities, unbroken the suc cess, immense the services of the Duke of Marlborough, the details of his campaigns can scarcely be said to be known to the vast majority of his countrymen. They have heard the distant echo of his fame, as they have that of the exploits of Timour, of Bajazet, and of Gen ghis Khan; the names of Blenheim and Ramillies, of Malplaquet and Oudenarde awaken a transient feeling of exultation in their bosoms but as to the particulars of these events, the difficulties with which their gen eral had to struggle, the objects for which he contend ed, even the places where they occurred, they are, for the most part, as ignorant as they are of similar details in the campaigns of Baber or Aurengzebe. What they do know is derived chiefly, if not entirely, from the his tories of their enemies. Malice and party spirit have done much to dim the reputation of the illustrious gen eral in his own country, but these disturbing passions have not been felt in other states and, strange to say, no adequate Opinion Of his merits can-be formed by his countrymen but by viewing the impression he has made on her enemies, or studying'the history of his Victories by them. Book The Life of John Duke of Marlborough With Some Account of His Contemporaries and of the War of the Succession Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of John Duke of Marlborough With Some Account of His Contemporaries and of the War of the Succession Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Archibald Alison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John, Duke of Marlborough With Some Account of His Contemporaries and of the War of the Succession, Vol. 1 The first edition of this work, in one volume, was intended as a mere sketch, chiefly for military readers, and was sug gested by the perusal of the Marlborough Despatches on their first appearance. The favourable reception which the work received from the public, and the increasing interest in the subject, has induced the Author in this edition to extend his original design, so as not only to embrace the political life of Marlborough, as well as the military, but to state at the end of every paragraph, as in his History of Europe, the authorities on which it was founded. In this way it has insensibly turned into a history of the War of the Succession, at least in those portions of it with which Great Britain is immediately concerned. Download or read book Marlborough s Other Army written by Nicholas Dorrell and published by Century of the Soldier. This book was released on 2019-06-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An often neglected aspect of Marlborough's war is its crucial campaign in Spain and Portugal, also known as the First Peninsula War of 1702-1712. Whilst this campaign was critical to the outcome of the war, relatively little information is available about it or the army that fought it. This work not only provides a detailed look at the army that fought the Spanish and Portuguese campaigns of Marlborough's war, but it also offers an insight into the course of the war in Iberia. It aims to provide more detail and understanding of a relatively little known part of a war that helped to shape and strengthened Britain's position amongst the main European players. Several chapters look at the national contingents that made up the confederate armies fighting in Spain and Portugal. The work concentrates not only on the reasonably well known British contribution but also on the equally important role of the less well known Austrian, Dutch, Palatine, Portuguese and Spanish contingents. These chapters provide general information about the units involved, their organization, tactics and other relevant detail. In other chapters the work concentrates in detail on the developments in the Spanish and Portuguese campaigns in each year of the war. Details of the composition of the armies in each campaign, their activities and battles, the size of the units, if known, in each year are provided. Attention is paid not only to the most famous engagement at Almanza but also to the other battles and skirmishes of the Iberian campaigns. The book provides a complete guide to the forces fighting in Marlborough's armies in Iberia. It will be a valuable addition to the library of both the casual reader and the serious history student with interest in this important part of British and European history. It not only offers for the first time an overview of all the contributions to the war effort in Iberia, but also presents the reader with a valuable contrast not only to Marlborough's campaigns of the time, but also perhaps to Wellington's later campaign.
