Book Uncertainty in Economics

Download or read book Uncertainty in Economics written by Peter Diamond and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainty in Economics: Readings and Exercises provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of the economics of uncertainty. This book discusses ho uncertainty affects both individual behavior and standard equilibrium theory. Organized into three parts encompassing 30 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the relevance of expected utility maximization for positive and normative theories of individual choice. This text then examines the biases in judgments, which reveal some heuristics of thinking under uncertainty. Other chapters consider the effect of restricting trade in contingent commodities to those trades that can be affected through the stock and bond markets. This book discusses as well the individual problem of sequential choice and equilibria, which are built around the notion of sequential choice. The final chapter deals with an entirely different aspect of the economics of information and reverts to the assumption that markets are perfect and costless. This book is a valuable resource for economists and students.

Book Nonlinear Dynamics in Equilibrium Models

Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics in Equilibrium Models written by John Stachurski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal growth theory studies the problem of efficient resource allocation over time, a fundamental concern of economic research. Since the 1970s, the techniques of nonlinear dynamical systems have become a vital tool in optimal growth theory, illuminating dynamics and demonstrating the possibility of endogenous economic fluctuations. Kazuo Nishimura's seminal contributions on business cycles, chaotic equilibria and indeterminacy have been central to this development, transforming our understanding of economic growth, cycles, and the relationship between them. The subjects of Kazuo's analysis remain of fundamental importance to modern economic theory. This book collects his major contributions in a single volume. Kazuo Nishimura has been recognized for his contributions to economic theory on many occasions, being elected fellow of the Econometric Society and serving as an editor of several major journals. Topics covered within the theory include decision theory, market allocation and prices, consumer decisions, theory of the firm, labour contracts, and public decisions.

Book Dynamics of Industry Growth

Download or read book Dynamics of Industry Growth written by Jati Sengupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic growth of a country depends on its industries. The focus of modern growth theory is basically macroeconomics, although neoclassical models use competitive markets and the optimization behavior of households and firms in general equilibrium framework. The emphasis here is on industry growth, where the microfoundations of industry are analyzed in terms of economic efficiency. The various linkages which link firm growth with the industry growth are discerned here under various market structures both competitive and monopolistic. The role of information in facilitating market signals and allowing the adoption of new processes has been especially emphasized in this volume. Many issues of market failure and the suboptimality of competitive equilibria are due to incomplete and imperfect information structures and we need a comprehensive theory of information structures underlying the process of industry growth and its dynamics. This book will be of interest to economists studying economic and industry growth and innovation.

Book General Equilibrium Foundations of Finance

Download or read book General Equilibrium Foundations of Finance written by Thorsten Hens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of General Equilibrium Foundations of Finance is to give a sound economic foundation of finance based on the general equilibrium model with incomplete markets which embodies the famous CAPM as an important special case. This goal is achieved by giving reasonable restrictions on the agents' characteristics that lead to a well determined financial markets model having a unique competitive equilibrium. The innovation of this book is to transfer and to extend the theoretical results on the structure of competitive equilibria into the modern context of incomplete financial markets. General Equilibrium Foundations of Finance should be easily accessible by advanced Ph.D. students as well as by theorists of any subfield of mathematical economics. It should be interesting both for theorists who are looking for possible applications of rigorous theorizing as well as for practitioners who seek for a theoretical foundation of fruitful applications of financial markets' models.

Book Investment Under Uncertainty

Download or read book Investment Under Uncertainty written by Avinash K. Dixit and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should firms decide whether and when to invest in new capital equipment, additions to their workforce, or the development of new products? Why have traditional economic models of investment failed to explain the behavior of investment spending in the United States and other countries? In this book, Avinash Dixit and Robert Pindyck provide the first detailed exposition of a new theoretical approach to the capital investment decisions of firms, stressing the irreversibility of most investment decisions, and the ongoing uncertainty of the economic environment in which these decisions are made. In so doing, they answer important questions about investment decisions and the behavior of investment spending. This new approach to investment recognizes the option value of waiting for better (but never complete) information. It exploits an analogy with the theory of options in financial markets, which permits a much richer dynamic framework than was possible with the traditional theory of investment. The authors present the new theory in a clear and systematic way, and consolidate, synthesize, and extend the various strands of research that have come out of the theory. Their book shows the importance of the theory for understanding investment behavior of firms; develops the implications of this theory for industry dynamics and for government policy concerning investment; and shows how the theory can be applied to specific industries and to a wide variety of business problems.

Book The Uncertain Hand

Download or read book The Uncertain Hand written by Christopher D. Hall and published by Chinese University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the sometimes bizarre and comical history of taxi regulations in Hong Kong. It compares the history of regulation changes to developments in the taxi business, including the rise and fall of the illegal taxi trade, the patterns of taxi accidents, malpractice complaints, and taxi license prices. The strange history of the market for taxi licenses shows that these regulations have been inconsistent, erratic and incomprehensible to people risking their money in the public auctions for licenses. In essence, this is an analysis of how people in the taxi business have studied the process of governmental regulation. The dispersion and volatility of taxi license auction prices, reveal the results of these studies and say more about their conclusions than any library of academic works will ever do.

Book A General Equilibrium Model of Sovereign Default and Business Cycles

Download or read book A General Equilibrium Model of Sovereign Default and Business Cycles written by Vivian Z. Yue and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging markets business cycle models treat default risk as part of an exogenous interest rate on working capital, while sovereign default models treat income fluctuations as an exogenous endowment process with ad-noc default costs. We propose instead a general equilibrium model of both sovereign default and business cycles. In the model, some imported inputs require working capital financing; default on public and private obligations occurs simultaneously. The model explains several features of cyclical dynamics around default triggers an efficiency loss as these inputs are replaced by imperfect substitutes; and default on public and private obligations occurs simultaneously. The model explains several features of cyclical dynamics around deraults, countercyclical spreads, high debt ratios, and key business cycle moments.
