Her life is swiftly dissolving into scandal. And in Victorian society, even a whisper of scandal--substantiated or not--can be the death of a young woman's reputation. Now under the watchful eye of Lord Roy Pierson, one of most influential men in England, Julia begrudgingly accepts his protection. But Chance Macy's power is far-reaching as well, and he is eager to assert his claim over her. Thrust into society as the Emerald Heiress, Julia is the toast of London, a celebrated curiosity. But in reality she's trapped between the clutches of two powerful men. Aided only by a gentleman whose intentions she prays she can trust, Julia must finally take control of her own fate--but outwitting one's foe rarely goes according to plan.

Book Metabiology

Download or read book Metabiology written by Arturo Carsetti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of life sciences, we are constantly confronted with information that possesses precise semantic values and appears essentially immersed in a specific evolutionary trend. In such a framework, Nature appears, in Monod’s words, as a tinkerer characterized by the presence of precise principles of self-organization. However, while Monod was obliged to incorporate his brilliant intuitions into the framework of first-order cybernetics and a theory of information with an exclusively syntactic character such as that defined by Shannon, research advances in recent decades have led not only to the definition of a second-order cybernetics but also to an exploration of the boundaries of semantic information. As H. Atlan states, on a biological level "the function self-organizes together with its meaning". Hence the need to refer to a conceptual theory of complexity and to a theory of self-organization characterized in an intentional sense. There is also a need to introduce, at the genetic level, a distinction between coder and ruler as well as the opportunity to define a real software space for natural evolution. The recourse to non-standard model theory, the opening to a new general semantics, and the innovative definition of the relationship between coder and ruler can be considered, today, among the most powerful theoretical tools at our disposal in order to correctly define the contours of that new conceptual revolution increasingly referred to as metabiology. This book focuses on identifying and investigating the role played by these particular theoretical tools in the development of this new scientific paradigm. Nature "speaks" by means of mathematical forms: we can observe these forms, but they are, at the same time, inside us as they populate our organs of cognition. In this context, the volume highlights how metabiology appears primarily to refer to the growth itself of our instruments of participatory knowledge of the world.

Orphaned and unmarried in a time when women are legal property of their fathers, husbands, and guardians, she finds herself at the mercy of an anonymous guardian who plans to establish her as a servant in far-off Scotland. With two months to devise a better plan, Julia’s first choice to marry her childhood sweetheart is denied. But when a titled dowager offers to introduce Julia into society, a realm of possibilities opens. However, treachery and deception are as much a part of Victorian society as titles and decorum, and Julia quickly discovers her present is deeply entangled with her mother’s mysterious past. Before she knows what’s happening, Julia finds herself a pawn in a deadly game between two of the country’s most powerful men. With no laws to protect her, she must unravel the secrets on her own. But sometimes truth is elusive and knowledge is deadly.

Book excerpt: For over 2000 years our culture has believed in the possibility of a single true account of the world. Now this age is coming to a close. As a result there is a deep unease. We are lost both as individuals, and as a culture. In the new relativistic, post-modern era, we have no history, no right or moral action, and no body of knowledge. In their place is a plethora of alternative, and sometimes incompatible theories from 'fuzzy logic' to 'consilience' proposing a theory of everything. Closure is a response to this crisis. It is a radically new story about the nature of ourselves and of the world. Closure exposes the central questions of contemporary philosophy: language and meaning, of the individual and identity, of truth and reality, but it is also philosophical in the broader everyday sense that it enables us to make sense of where and who we are. A central principle, the process of closure, is shown to be at the heart of experience and language. As a theory of knowledge it has dramatic consequences for our understanding of the sciences, involving a reinterpretation of what science does and how it is able to do it. It similarly proposes a profound shift in the role of art and religion. But, above all, it reshapes our understanding of ourselves and the organisation of society, our goals and our capacity to achieve them. A superb new account of how order is created out of disorder, Closure is an exhilarating work of conceptual geography.

Download or read book Demian written by Hermann Hesse and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demian is generally considered to be Hermann Hesse's finest novel. This classic is a landmark in literature, a standout among traditional stories of the journey to the self. This fresh new translation faithfully reproduces the lively style and impact of Hesse's original writing. The work is autobiographical, and as Hal Hager has observed, "In Demian, published under the pseudonym of its protagonist and narrator, Emil Sinclair, Hesse succeeded for the first time in bringing together in a coherent fashion his main concerns and beliefs." It is a cure for nihilism, Facebook, and self-despair.

Book excerpt: This is the first modern edition of the collected works of Supply Belcher, Maine's most celebrated early composer, who was known in his day as the Handel of Maine. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Maine was part of the northeastern frontier, a sparsely settled area that held to the old ways. Thus, its compilers reprinted and singers sang the music of Billings, Read, Swan, Holden, and other Yankee psalmodists long after a reform movement had swept them from the galleries of southern New-England churches. Belcher was a man much honored in the region as a musician, a public servant, and a civic leader. Following military service in the Revolutionary War, he opened Belcher's Tavern, where local musicians frequently gathered for sings. In addition to being a composer, Belcher was also a singer, a violinist, and a prominent member of the Stoughton Musical Society. He published seventy-four works between l788, when his first tune appeared in print, and 1819, when his final contributions to psalmody were issued. As this edition of his collected works reveals, his vigorous and skillful pieces show him to have been an original and creative spirit in psalmody, and even today are worthy of attention and performance.
