Book Radar Imaging for Maritime Observation

Download or read book Radar Imaging for Maritime Observation written by Fabrizio Berizzi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the experiences of the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa and the Radar and Surveillance System (RaSS) national laboratory of the National Interuniversity Consortium of Telecommunication (CNIT), Radar Imaging for Maritime Observation presents the most recent results in radar imaging for maritime observation. The book explores both the areas of sea surface remote sensing and maritime surveillance providing key theoretical concepts of SAR and ISAR imaging and more advanced and ad-hoc techniques for applications in maritime scenarios. The book is organized in two sections. The first section discusses the fundamentals of standard SAR/ISAR processing and novel imaging techniques, such as Bistatic, Passive, and, 3D Interferometric ISAR. The second section focuses on the applications and results obtained by processing real data from maritime observations like SAR image processing for oil spill, detection in SAR images and fractal analysis. Useful to both beginners and experts in maritime observation, this book provides several examples of (mainly space-borne) radar imaging of maritime targets. Nevertheless, the same principles and techniques apply to the case of manned or unmanned carriers and to ground and air moving targets.

Book Sentinel 1 Maritime Surveillance

Download or read book Sentinel 1 Maritime Surveillance written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentinel-1 is the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite of the EU's Copernicus program for Earth observation. Being a radar, it is very suitable for ship detection. Sentinel-1 produces routinely a large amount of images over the seas and coasts, in particular in Europe and the Arctic but also elsewhere on the globe. Up to now, software to analyse satellite SAR images for ship detection was limited to handle a few images at the time, so was not up to the high production volume of Sentinel-1. This report describes improvements in JRC's ship detector SUMO to fully automatically process large amounts of images. With this increased capability, time series of many months of Sentinel-1 images are analysed over two sites in the Arctic, revealing the seasonal relation between ship traffic and sea ice. Also a multi-month data set over the Mediterranean Sea, mapping the shipping patterns there, and a one-year data set over the Western Indian Ocean are analysed. The combination of the Sentinel-1 ship detections with ship positions derived from ship self-reporting systems (AIS and LRIT) results in the quantification and mapping of the non-reporting ship traffic, that is not seen on AIS or LRIT. Beyond mere detection, new methods are tested to estimate the size of the ships from their signature in the Sentinel-1 images, and to allow discrimination between tankers and cargo vessels even if they are of similar size. The occurrence of range ambiguities, and the impact of SAR imaging effects on the apparent heading of the ship signatures are briefly discussed. The developments and experiences discussed here should further promote Sentinel-1 in becoming a tool for maritime surveillance to the benefit of maritime safety, security and sustainability, including spatial planning.

Book A New Target Detector Based on Geometrical Perturbation Filters for Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar POL SAR

Download or read book A New Target Detector Based on Geometrical Perturbation Filters for Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar POL SAR written by Armando Marino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a groundbraking methodology for the radar international community. The detection approach introduced, namely perturbation analysis, is completey novel showing a remarkable capability of thinking outside the box. Perturbation analysis is able to push forward the performance limits of current algorithms, allowing the detection of targets smaller than the resolution cell and highly embedded in clutter. The methodology itself is extraordinary flexibe and has already been used in two other large projects, funded by the ESA (European Space Agency): M-POL for maritime surveillance, and DRAGON-2 for land classification with particular attention to forests. This book is a perfectly organised piece of work where every detail and perspective is taken into account in order to provide a comprehensive vision of the problems and solutions.

Book First Analyses of Sentinel 1 Images for Maritime Surveillance

Download or read book First Analyses of Sentinel 1 Images for Maritime Surveillance written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentinel-1 is the European Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite operational since 3 October 2014. The SAR's characteristics should make it suitable for maritime surveillance (ship detection), and it will routinely collect a large amount of maritime imagery over European and global seas. After its launch in April 2014, preliminary data have been made available to limited users in the satellite's commissioning phase, and since the start of the operational phase data are available to the general public. These early data have been used to assess the quality of Sentinel-1 images and their suitability for ship detection. This was partly done by using the JRC's ship detection software SUMO, after adaptation to ingest and process Sentinel-1 data. It is found that the sensor lives up to its specifications, thereby making it very useful for maritime surveillance thanks to its combination of wide swath and low noise at the medium resolution with which it will mostly be operated ("IW" and "EW" modes).

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information is always required by organizations of coastal states about the movements, identities and intentions of vessels sailing in the waters of interest to them, which may be coastal waters, straits, inland waterways, rivers, lakes or open seas. This interest may stem from defense requirements or from needs for the protection of off-shore resources, enhanced search and rescue services, deterrence of smuggling, drug trafficking and other illegal activities and/or for providing vessel traffic services for safe and efficient navigation and protection of the environment. To meet these needs it is necessary to have a well designed maritime surveillance and control system capable of tracking ships and providing other types of information required by a variety of user groups ranging from port authorities, shipping companies, marine exchanges to governments and the military. Principles of Integrated Maritime Surveillance Systems will be of vital interest to anyone responsible for the design, implementation or provision of a well designed maritime surveillance and control system capable of tracking ships and providing navigational and other types of information required for safe navigation and efficient commercial operation. Principles of Integrated Maritime Surveillance Systems is therefore essential to a variety of user groups ranging from port authorities to shipping companies and marine exchanges as well as civil governments and the military.

Book Ground Moving Target Indication with Synthetic Aperture Radars for Maritime Surveillance

Download or read book Ground Moving Target Indication with Synthetic Aperture Radars for Maritime Surveillance written by Eduardo Makhoul Varona and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Ship Detection and Property Extraction in Radar Images on Hardware

Download or read book Ship Detection and Property Extraction in Radar Images on Hardware written by Koray Kilinc and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we review the problem of radar imaging satellites' dependency on ground stations to transfer the image data. Since synthetic aperture radar images are very big, only ground stations are equipped to transfer that much data. This is a problem for maritime surveillance as it creates delay between the imaging and processing. We propose a new hardware algorithm that can be used by a satellite to detect ships and extract information about them, and since this information is smaller it can be relayed to reduce the delay significantly. For ship detection, an adaptive thresholding algorithm with exponential model is used. This algorithm was selected as it is the best fit for single-look radar images. For the property calculation, a data accumulating, single-look, connected component labeling algorithm is proposed. This algorithm accumulates data about the connected components, which is then used to calculate the properties of ships using image moments. The combined algorithm was then validated on Radarsat-2 images using Matlab for software and co-simulation for hardware.

Book Ship Detection Performance Predictions for Next Generation Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radars

Download or read book Ship Detection Performance Predictions for Next Generation Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radars written by Marcus V. da Silva Simoes and published by . This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following success in other areas as a remote sensor, the spaceborne microwave image radars are assuming a notable position in the problem of ship detection for civilian and military purposes. This work will discuss the strong and weak points of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) when used for ship detection. First, the thesis gives a brief description of SAR fundamentals, image processing and the parameters for ship detection. Second, the actual techniques, limitations, errors and some models used for ship detection are described. Finally, using a well-known and reliable ship detection model (Vachon et al. 1997), tested in the Canadian Ocean Monitoring Workstation and in some validation field programs, the new generation of spaceborne SARs, mainly RADARSAT 2, are analyzed for ship detection capabilities. During the analysis parameters like wind velocity, wind direction related to the antenna, satellite incident angle and Number of Looks are changed to study their influence on ship detection.

Book Proceedings of the 12th Reinventing Space Conference

Download or read book Proceedings of the 12th Reinventing Space Conference written by Scott Hatton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of the 2014 Reinventing Space conference present a number of questions in the context of a constantly innovating space industry, from addressing the future of global cooperation, investigating the impact of cuts in US government spending on the private space sector, and probing the overall future of the commercial launch sector. Space tourism and new technology promise the revival of interest in space development (the Apollo Era was the first period of intense space activity and growth). The need to create dramatically lower cost, responsive and reliable launch systems and spacecraft has never been more vital. Advances in technology are allowing smaller and cheaper satellites to be orbited - from cubesats to nanosatellites to femtosatellites. Thanks to more efficient new launch possibilities, low cost access to space is becoming ever more achievable. Commercial companies and countries are targeting the industry with new funding. Organised by the British Interplanetary Society, the presentations at this conference thoroughly address these challenges and opportunities.
