Who taught the shipwrights in the Royal Danish Shipyard in Copenhagen to build carvel planked ships? How did the first Danish ships find their way to the riches of the East Indies? These questions and many more are meet in this Ph.D. dissertation, which circles around the maritime relationships between especially the seaward provinces of the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries. In the early renaissance Dutch maritime technology was imported by the Danish king, who recruited craftsmen and bough ships in the Netherlands and later on the Royal Danish Navy was profoundly influenced by Dutch master shipbuilders and naval officers. But it was not only maritime experts and mariners who travelled to the North, but also ordinary Scandinavian sailors, who migrated the other way and took a part in Dutch shipping to all parts of the world. This labour migration has been known amongst Dutch scholars for some time, but is almost unknown in Scandinavian historical circles.For the first time data from the Amsterdam City archive has made it possible to get closer to the individual sailors, who hailed from the coastal districts of Norway, the Southwest coast of Denmark and for a lesser part the West coast of Sweden and their participation in the Dutch shipping industry has been analysed showing, that they learned important maritime skills onboard. Coming back to Scandinavia these sailors were the backbone of the navies and merchant fleets of the Scandinavian countries especially in the eighteenth century.This study of maritime labour migration will be of interest for scholars of maritime-, migration and technology history but also for anyone, who likes to read about the life's and work of ordinary sailors in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Book excerpt: "This book utilises archaeological evidence to establish that during the Late Iron Age and Roman periods there were three maritime exchange systems operating in the waters of the North Sea and Channel: the Atlantic system, encompassing the Western Channel and Europe's Atlantic seaboard; the Southern North Sea and Eastern Channel system, focusing on the Strait of Dover; and the Eastern North Sea system, which stretched from the mouth of the Rhine to the North Sea coast of Denmark. These three systems were all to some extent coherent, although the Atlantic and Southern North Sea and Eastern Channel systems displayed considerable overlap. Maritime connectivity in each of these systems was highly variable over time in terms of the mechanisms of exchange employed and particularly in terms of the scale and strength of exchange. This variability was principally a result of wider political and economic changes, which often had simultaneous effects upon all three systems, though the precise nature of these effects was often different in each of the systems. The 'vulnerability' of connectivity in the North Sea and Channel contrasts with the picture of Mediterranean connectivity; the Mediterranean saw much greater continuity with high levels of connectivity maintained over the longue durée. Recent major surveys of maritime exchange have emphasised the importance of taking a long-term view and have, to some extent, downplayed short and medium-term changes. In this study the author's findings suggest that short- and medium-term changes could be very significant; nevertheless, it appears probable that there was a structure, based ultimately on geography, which ensured that the three connective systems outlined in this survey endured across the longue durée. Hence, the author argues that relating different scales of change to each another is crucial and should be a principal goal of future work in this field."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: This study explores the connection between global maritime and migration networks to better understand the acceleration of the transatlantic migration rate that took place in the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It brings together the actions of migrants, government regulators, transatlantic shipping companies, and the agents who represented them to determine the motives and opportunities for transatlantic mass-migration. The study is comprised of an introductory chapter, seven essays by maritime scholars, and a conclusion. The subject is approached from three particular discussion points: the rate of development and the accessibility of transport networks for European migrants; the competition between shipping companies and the subsequent influence on migration; and the integration of labour markets in both Europe and America. It concludes by suggesting both maritime and migration historians should merge their respective fields by including the larger frameworks of each discipline to gain further understanding of their disciplines, and identifies the role of ports and shipping companies as crucial to any further study of mass migration.

The central aim here is to explore Ôcross-channelÕ relationships throughout later prehistory, investigating the archaeological links (material, social, cultural) between the areas we now call Britain and Ireland, and continental Europe, from the Mesolithic through to the end of the Iron Age. Since the separation from the European mainland of Ireland (c. 16,000 BC) and Britain (c. 6000 BC), their island nature has been seen as central to many aspects of life within them, helping to define their senses of identity, and forming a crucial part of their neighbourly relationship with continental Europe and with each other. However, it is important to remember that the surrounding seaways have often served to connect as well as to separate these islands from the continent. In approaching the subject of Ôcontinental connectionsÕ in the long-term, and by bringing a variety of different archaeological perspectives (associated with different periods) to bear on it, this volume provides a new a new synthesis of the ebbs and flows of the cross-channel relationship over the course of 15,000 years of later prehistory, enabling fresh understandings and new insights to emerge about the intimately linked trajectories of change in both regions.
