Book excerpt: Marino Marini is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding figures on the scene of European sculpture in our century. His production, ranging from the early Thirties to the end of the Seventies, is characterised by great expressive intensity resulting from a powerful plastic synthesis of material, form and space. His artistic approach, that uses just a few themes to express the entire world of his connections and considerations about man and life, has a density of meaning and an evocative capacity that make his work extremely modern. After the introduction by Rosa Maria Letts (director of the European Academy in London) the book contains two essays by Erich Steingrober and Mario De Micheli, followed by a text by Luigi Cavadini on the years the Tuscan artist spent in Switzerland, the catalogue of the works and an exhaustive biographical notice edited by Laura Lorenzoni. Over a hundred and twenty sculptures, paintings and drawings document the span of Marini's thought and artistic evolution from his beginnings to his full maturity, through some of his greatest masterpieces.

Book excerpt: A wildly entertaining and surprisingly educational dive into art history as you've never seen it before, from the host of the beloved ArtCurious podcast We're all familiar with the works of Claude Monet, thanks in no small part to the ubiquitous reproductions of his water lilies on umbrellas, handbags, scarves, and dorm-room posters. But did you also know that Monet and his cohort were trailblazing rebels whose works were originally deemed unbelievably ugly and vulgar? And while you probably know the tale of Vincent van Gogh's suicide, you may not be aware that there's pretty compelling evidence that the artist didn't die by his own hand but was accidentally killed--or even murdered. Or how about the fact that one of Andy Warhol's most enduring legacies involves Caroline Kennedy's moldy birthday cake and a collection of toenail clippings? ArtCurious is a colorful look at the world of art history, revealing some of the strangest, funniest, and most fascinating stories behind the world's great artists and masterpieces. Through these and other incredible, weird, and wonderful tales, ArtCurious presents an engaging look at why art history is, and continues to be, a riveting and relevant world to explore.

Download or read book The Renaissance Restored written by Matthew Hayes and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handsomely illustrated volume traces the intersections of art history and paintings restoration in nineteenth-century Europe. Repairing works of art and writing about them—the practices that became art conservation and art history—share a common ancestry. By the nineteenth century the two fields had become inseparably linked. While the art historical scholarship of this period has been widely studied, its restoration practices have received less scrutiny—until now. This book charts the intersections between art history and conservation in the treatment of Italian Renaissance paintings in nineteenth-century Europe. Initial chapters discuss the restoration of works by Giotto and Titian framed by the contemporary scholarship of art historians such as Jacob Burckhardt, G. B. Cavalcaselle, and Joseph Crowe that was redefining the earlier age. Subsequent chapters recount how paintings conservation was integrated into museum settings. The narrative uses period texts, unpublished archival materials, and historical photographs in probing how paintings looked at a time when scholars were writing the foundational texts of art history, and how contemporary restorers were negotiating the appearances of these works. The book proposes a model for a new conservation history, object-focused yet enriched by consideration of a wider cultural horizon.

In 60 essays, drawn from around the globe, it reveals new dimensions about how artists make their art, resist censorship and retain an independent, creative spirit. The essays ask and answer several crucial questions: How do artists in Europe, the United States, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin and South America find space to live and work? How do artists follow their talent to make and exhibit original art in a politicized world where artistic freedom is often limited? How do smaller artistic venues survive the economic pressures and competition in the art market? Focusing on under-the-radar subjects, the reports, interviews, and essays illuminate the pain and pleasures of artistic production and the challenges faced by artists, curators, and gallerists.

Book excerpt: Visual Passions' examines how the sculpture of Marino Marini was influenced by those major episodes in Italian and international art to which he was drawn.0The post World War II period saw his fame spread abroad and his works enter major international museums and foreign private collections. The purpose of this exhibition catalogue is to establish the visual links that connect Marini's sculpture to the work of major sculptors of the late nineteenth and twentieth-centuries (Rodin, Maillol, Despiau, Lehmbruck, Picasso, Moore).0Despite a long exhibition history and a vast bibliography, Marini has never adequately been studied in terms of the historical and stylistic context of his production. This book sets out to rectify this omission, which alone can establish Marini's proper place in the history of twentieth-century Modernism.00Exhibition: Palazzo Fabroni, Pistoia, Italy (16.09.2017-07.01.2018).

Book Across Art and Fashion

Download or read book Across Art and Fashion written by Stefania Ricci and published by Antique Collector's Club. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Is fashion art? A simple question conceals the complex universe of an articulated relationship that has long been investigated, but without arriving at a clear and unequivocal definition. This project analyses the forms of dialogue between these two worlds: reciprocal inspirations, overlaps and collaborations, from the experiences of the Pre-Raphaelites to those of Futurism, and from Surrealism to Radical Fashion. The exhibition itinerary focuses on the work of Salvatore Ferragamo, who was fascinated and inspired by the avant-garde art movements of the 20th century, on several ateliers of the Fifties and Sixties that were venues for studies and encounters, and on the advent of the culture of celebrities. It then examines the experimentation of the Nineties and goes on to ponder whether in the contemporary cultural industry we can still talk about two separate worlds or if we are instead dealing with a fluid interplay of roles. The distinctive aspect of the exhibition layout lies in the collaboration with other cultural institutions, which took an active part in implementing this concept with the aim of inspiring joint reflection: in addition to the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo, promotor and organizer of the project together with the Fondazione Ferragamo, in Florence the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, the Gallerie degli Uffizi (the Galleria d'arte moderna di Palazzo Pitti and the Galleria del Costume), the Museo Marino Marini, and in Prato the Museo del Tessuto"--Publisher's description.
