Book The Benefits of Integrated Marine Planning

Download or read book The Benefits of Integrated Marine Planning written by Megan Dickinson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to concerns over marine ecological health and conflict among competing uses, new integrated approaches to the management of oceans and coastal areas are evolving in many settings. This study begins with an analysis of international cases to determine common benefits of integrated marine planning, and to identify factors that contribute to a successful integrated marine planning process. The study then describes a survey that was carried out to investigate perceptions of the benefits of marine planning for key stakeholder groups on the Pacific coast of Canada. The results of the survey show strong support for creating a marine plan in this region. Next, a set of best practices criteria for integrated marine planning is developed and used to evaluate and make recommendations to improve the Canadian marine planning framework as it has been applied on the Pacific coast.

Book Integrated Oceans Management Planning in Canada

Download or read book Integrated Oceans Management Planning in Canada written by Michelle Patricia Eileen Vandermoor and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, there has been a surge of interest around the world in marine planning as an innovative approach to balancing sustainable development and conservation of the marine environment. In 2009, a marine planning process was initiated for a region called the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area (PNCIMA) in British Columbia, Canada. The final integrated oceans management plan for the PNCIMA was officially endorsed in February 2017. The collaborative planning process used to prepare the PNCIMA plan was evaluated using a multi-criteria evaluation method. The results show that the PNCIMA process had strengths and weaknesses: three of the twenty-six best practice criteria were met, thirteen were moderately met, and nine were unmet. Further, stakeholders reached consensus on some but not all elements of the PNCIMA plan. Recommendations are identified for design and management of future collaborative marine planning processes based on the PNCIMA evaluation.

Book excerpt: As climate change, resource overexploitation, and pollution leave ever more visible marks, ocean ecosystems, economies, and people are all affected. With coasts on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic, Canada faces a formidable challenge in building resilient, sustainable oceans and supporting the communities that rely on them. Sea Change reports on the OceanCanada Partnership, a multidisciplinary project to take stock of what we know about Canada’s oceans, construct possible scenarios for coastal regions, and create a national dialogue and vision. Three themes emerge from this impressive synthesis of social, cultural, economic, and environmental research: ocean change, access to ocean resources, and ocean governance. Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars and practitioners focus on finding solutions to rapid environmental and social transformation, outlining the implications for legislation and offering policy recommendations. Increasingly, civil society will have to advocate for oceans, and Sea Change will empower the voices of those who take up that task.

Book The Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Marine Areas

Download or read book The Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Marine Areas written by Stephen Allen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of what rights might be afforded to Indigenous peoples has preoccupied the municipal legal systems of settler states since the earliest colonial encounters. As a result of sustained institutional initiatives, many national legal regimes and the international legal order accept that Indigenous peoples possess an extensive array of legal rights. However, despite this development, claims advanced by Indigenous peoples relating to rights to marine spaces have been largely opposed. This book offers the first sustained study of these rights and their reception within modern legal systems. Taking a three-part approach, it looks firstly at the international aspects of Indigenous entitlements in marine spaces. It then goes on to explore specific country examples, before looking at some interdisciplinary themes of crucial importance to the question of the recognition of the rights of Indigenous peoples in marine settings. Drawing on the expertise of leading scholars, this is a rigorous and long-overdue exploration of a significant gap in the literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a guide for marine conservation practice, Marine Conservation takes a whole-systems approach, covering major advances in marine ecosystem understanding. Its premise is that conservation must be informed by the natural histories of organisms together with the hierarchy of scale-related linkages and ecosystem processes. The authors introduce a broad range of overlapping issues and the conservation mechanisms that have been devised to achieve marine conservation goals. The book provides students and conservation practitioners with a framework for thoughtful, critical thinking in order to incite innovation in the 21st century. "Marine Conservation presents a scholarly but eminently readable case for the necessity of a systems approach to conserving the oceans, combining superb introductions to the science, law and policy frameworks with carefully chosen case studies. This superb volume is a must for anyone interested in marine conservation, from students and practitioners to lay readers and policy-makers." —Simon Levin, George M. Moffett Professor of Biology, Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Princeton University

Book Ocean Zoning

  • Author : Tundi S. Agardy
  • Publisher : Routledge

Download or read book Ocean Zoning written by Tundi S. Agardy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our knowledge of the oceans is increasing rapidly, as more powerful tools for exploration and exploitation make it easier to locate valuable resources, such as fish stocks, oil and gas reserves, or sites for wind and hydropower schemes. At the same time competition for space has intensified, affecting marine life and people's livelihoods. Much has been written about marine management using marine protected areas, but MPAs are only a small subset of spatial management tools available. MPAs and MPA networks are better seen as starting points for more comprehensive spatial management, facilitated by ocean zoning. This logical scaling up from discreet piecemeal protected areas to larger and more systematic planning is happening around the world, but few are aware that we are entering a brave new world in ocean management with zoning at its core. This book provides guidance on using ocean zoning to improve marine management. It reviews the benefits of ocean zoning in theory, reviews progress made in zoning around the world through a wide range of case studies, and derives lessons learned to recommend a process by which future zoning can be maximally effective and efficient. This book was released on 2008 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is meant as a planning tool for managers who must consider the management of a number of present and proposed habitat-altering activities prosecuted in these areas. Based on the fact that Head Harbour / West Isles / The Passages were identified as EBSAs because of their benthic habitat attributes, such activities pose an elevated concern. The consensus of workshop participants was to recommend the application of protection measures for Head Harbour / West Isles / The Passages.":--from abstract.
