Book Fisheries Development and Management in India 1785 1986

Download or read book Fisheries Development and Management in India 1785 1986 written by Nune Subba Rao and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1989 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries play an important role in the economy of nations bordering the sea and this is especially true in a populous country like India where a large majority continues to live below the poverty line. Sea fishing has been an occupation with the coastal people of India since time immemorial forming an integral part of the maritime heritage. Machanisation has been introduced into the marine fishing with a view to exploit the fisheries potential all along the Indian coastline of 6,500 km by overcoming the deficiencies of the centuries old traditional fishing technology and to augment fish production with a higher fishing effort and also to raise the income levels and living standards of fishermen. The present book, based on the author’s doctoral dissertation, made a bold and pioneering attempt to evaluate the costs and earnings of mechanised and traditional boats for determining their relative operational efficiency and to examine intensively the effects of mechanisation on employment, income levels, consumption pattern and levels of living of fishermen and their social implications. While analysing the merits of the new fishing technology and also the reactions of different groups of fishermen to mechanisation, he spotlights the shortsightedness in the implementation of the programme of mechanisation resulting in a host of negative effects which have implications and also sets forth the valuable lessons which Indian experiences have to offer to the densely populated littoral nations in the Third World. To ensure enduring benefits to the vast majority of marine fishermen, the thesis underscores, among numerous other remedies the need for the provision of an intermediary technology, the need for the institutional support and marketing network and the need for the management of fisheries resources. It also calls for the policies to bring about socio-economic development of the fishing community on par with the rest of the society. All in all, a genuine contribution to knowledge of `grassroots' situations that will have enduring value and that can be useful in both academic and policy-formation circles.

Book excerpt: The seemingly inexhaustible oceans have proved to be finite after all. Capture of wild fish have leveled off since the mid-1980s, and many stocks of fish are fished so heavily that their future is threatened. And yet the world's appetite for fish has continued to increase, particularly as urban populations and incomes grow in developing countries. Aquaculture--fish farming--has arrived to meet this increased demand. Production of fish from aquaculture has exploded in the past 20 years and continues to expand around the world. But will aquaculture be sufficient to provide affordable fish to the world over the next 20 years? And what environmental and poverty problems will aquaculture face as it expands? Using a state-of-the-art computer model of global supply and demand for food and feed commodities, this book projects the likely changes in the fisheries sector over the next two decades. As prices for most food commodities fall, fish prices are expected to rise, reflecting demand for fish that outpaces the ability of the world to supply it. The model shows that developing countries will consume and produce a much greater share of the world's fish in the future, and trade in fisheries commodities will also increase. The authors show the causes and implications of these and other changes, and argue for specific actions and policies that can improve outcomes for the poor and for the environment.

Book Export Performance of Marine Products from India

Download or read book Export Performance of Marine Products from India written by Swaminathan Balasubramaniam and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, , language: English, abstract: Marine products industry alone has a share of at least 6 per cent in world exports in which India is the fourth largest exporting country after China, Peru and Japan. In fact, out of 7.85 million tonnes (mt) of overall fish production of India, roughly 43 per cent is contributed by the marine sector though it turns out to be less than half to that of India’s major competitors in fish trade. Marine products exports play a pivotal role in Indian economy in terms of employment and income generation besides valuable foreign exchange earnings. They have created a huge demand in international trade and are acclaimed to be one of the fastest moving commodities in the world food market. China, Thailand, Vietnam, Chile, Taiwan, Indonesia, India, Peru and South Korea are the main sea-food exporters comprising more than 60 per cent of trade value of marine products. In general, 38 per cent (live weight equivalent) of total fisheries product is traded internationally. But with only 20 per cent of its total fish production entering world trade, Indian seafood exports are far below than the global average. Fortunately, India’s vast coastline of 8,129 km stretching almost two-thirds of the country and encompassing an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of more than 2.2 million sq. km. offers sufficient surplus of fish and fishery products, which is currently under-exploited. As of 2015-16, marine products with export earnings crossing Rs. 30,420 crores constituted 21 per cent of the total agricultural exports from India which in turn was 1.2 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) and 4.72 per cent of its Agri-GDP.
