Book Marine Hard Bottom Communities

Download or read book Marine Hard Bottom Communities written by Martin Wahl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-22 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine hard bottoms feature some of the most spectacular and diverse biological communities on this planet. These not only contain a rich treasure of genetic, taxonomic and functional information but also deliver irreplaceable ecosystem services. At the same time, they are highly vulnerable and increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressures. This volume has collected contributions by 50 scientists from numerous biogeographic regions, dealing with characteristics of hard bottom communities. Distributional patterns in space and time are described, followed by analyses of the intrinsic and extrinsic dynamics producing these patterns. A strong emphasis is placed on the ongoing changes occurring in the structure and diversity of these communities in response to spiralling environmental impacts, and on state-of-the-art countermeasures aiming to preserve these ecological treasures. Finally, various values of diversity are assessed, hopefully as an incentive for enhanced conservation efforts.

Book excerpt: In a perspective of sustainable management, the balance between ecological dynamics, social and economic are now at the heart of ecological modeling and environmental strategies screenwriting. Diversity and marine ecosystems function illustrates biodiversity, habitat diversity, structures and food webs in various oceans of the world and systems: pelagic and benthic ecosystems, coral reefs and seagrass beds, oasis of hydrothermal vents ridges or areas rich upwelling. Appropriate observation methods, long-term monitoring and modeling reveal the complexity of systems, trophic interactions and spatiotemporal dynamics. The ecosystem approach is a prerequisite to assess the state of these systems, their living resources and ecological services involved in local and global environmental changes.

Download or read book Plant animal Interactions in the Marine Benthos written by D. M. John and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional compartmentalization of biological sciences is increasingly breaking down or being considered irrelevant by new generations of biological scientists. Marine biologists have generally been ahead of such trends, as is evident from much recent research on plant-animal interactions in the marine benthos.

Book Biofouling

    Book Details:
  • Author : Simone Dürr
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2009-12-21
  • ISBN : 1405169265
  • Pages : 477 pages

Download or read book Biofouling written by Simone Dürr and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-12-21 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biofouling (the colonisation of an interface by a diverse array of organisms) is almost always a problem where it occurs, as it negatively affects surfaces, the materials that they are made from and the structures that they form, and can even destroy them. This comprehensive book covers in detail in its first section the processes involved in marine , freshwater and medical biofouling including coverage of settlement by larvae and spores, biofouling community processes, epibiosis (biofouling on living organisms) and microbial fouling, including biofilms deleterious to human health. The book's second section, encompassing biofouling processes with industrial implications, includes coverage of biofouling on artificial substrata, paints and coatings technology for the control of marine biofouling, biofouling and antifouling in the maritime industries, such as shipping, offshore oil , and aquaculture, and in power stations and other industries. The impacts of both biofouling and biofouling control and details of current legislation of relevance to biofouling issues are fully covered. The book's final section looks at methods for the measurement of biofouling, and future prospects for biofouling, including in-depth coverage of the changes anticipated in biofouling worldwide due to global climate change, and likely future directions in antifouling research, technology and legislation. Biofouling, which includes contributions from many international experts, is an essential reference for all those working in the antifouling industry including those involved in formulation of antifouling products such as paints and other coatings. Aquatic biologists, ecologists, environmental scientists and lawyers, marine engineers, aquaculture personnel, chemists, and medical researchers will all find much of interest within this book. All universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should have copies of this important work on their shelves.

Book Biodiversity in Enclosed Seas and Artificial Marine Habitats

Download or read book Biodiversity in Enclosed Seas and Artificial Marine Habitats written by G. Relini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-10 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main themes of the Symposium were biodiversity in enclosed and semi-enclosed seas and artificial habitats, and the restoration of degraded systems. These themes are highly relevant today. The papers dealing with the first theme represent current research and concerns about marine biodiversity in enclosed seas. The papers in the second theme represent a synthesis of up-to-date knowledge on artificial habitats.

Book The Marine Microbiome

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lucas J. Stal
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-06-03
  • ISBN : 3319330004
  • Pages : 501 pages

Download or read book The Marine Microbiome written by Lucas J. Stal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the state-of-the-art concerning the ‘marine microbiome’ and its uses in biotechnology. The first part discusses the diversity and ecology of marine microorganisms and viruses, including all three domains of life: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. It discusses whether marine microorganisms exist and, if so, why they might be unique. The second part presents selected marine habitats, their inhabitants and how they influence biogeochemical cycles, while the third discusses the utilization of marine microbial resources, including legal aspects, dissemination, and public awareness. The marine microbiome is the total of microorganisms and viruses in the ocean and seas and in any connected environment, including the seafloor and marine animals and plants. The diversity of microbial life remains unquantified and largely unknown, and could represent a hidden treasure for human society. Accordingly, this book is also intended to connect academics and industry, providing essential information for microbiologists from both fields.
