Book Marine Pollution and Human Health

Download or read book Marine Pollution and Human Health written by R E Hester and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is growing concern about the state of the world's oceans. The rapid growth of human populations in coastal regions has led to increasing dependence on marine resources. Beneficial features related to food supply and life style need to be balanced against the hazards presented by microbial pathogens, chemical pollutants, and toxic algal blooms. In this book, a group of experts from a range of backgrounds review the key aspects of the marine environment in relation to human health. An initial overview explains the need for integrating a range of disciplines, from physical oceanography and marine biology to molecular biology and epidemiology. Only by this approach can we hope to predict the consequences of environmental change and exploitation of natural resources upon our coastal ecosystems and, ultimately, on society and human health. Subsequent chapters then focus on more specialized topics. Firstly, waterborne pathogens are reviewed in detail and the microbial measures and policy implications important for protecting humans from exposure are described. Next, the consumption of contaminated seafood is considered along with its implications regarding the growth of aquaculture. Priority pollutants, emerging contaminants, and plastics are investigated as are the effects of climate change on pollution. Some phytoplankton produce biotoxins which accumulate in the flesh of filter-feeders such as bivalve molluscs. This creates a health risk when the shellfish are consumed by humans. The penultimate chapter, therefore, concentrates on harmful algal blooms (HABs) and the methodologies used to safeguard human health. The book concludes by proposing a holistic systems approach, such as Integrated Coastal Zone Management, to address the interconnected scientific challenges of increased human population pressure, pollution, over-exploitation of food resources, and the urgent need for effective public health solutions to be developed from politically and environmentally meaningful policies.

Book The Human Factors of Process Safety and Worker Empowerment in the Offshore Oil Industry

Download or read book The Human Factors of Process Safety and Worker Empowerment in the Offshore Oil Industry written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 2010 Deepwater Horizon blowout and oil spill, efforts to improve safety in the offshore oil industry have resulted in the adoption of new technological controls, increased promotion of safety culture, and the adoption of new data collection systems to improve both safety and performance. As an essential element of a positive safety culture, operators and regulators are increasingly integrating strategies that empower workers to participate in process safety decisions that reduce hazards and improve safety. While the human factors of personal safety have been widely studied and widely adopted in many high-risk industries, process safety â€" the application of engineering, design, and operative practices to address major hazard concerns â€" is less well understood from a human factors perspective, particularly in the offshore oil industry. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine organized a workshop in January 2018 to explore best practices and lessons learned from other high-risk, high-reliability industries for the benefit of the research community and of citizens, industry practitioners, decision makers, and officials addressing safety in the offshore oil industry. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Safety provides a toolbox of field-tested and proven tools for assessing and managing marine risks and making better-informed decisions to prevent marine casualties. Using this book as a guide, managers in the marine industry learn to apply 12 common risk-based decision-making tools that help them make practical and technically-defensible decisions for managing port and waterway operations, conducting inspections, and preparing and responding to accidents. The authors thorough examine the 12 tools and include discussions on each tool's concepts, limitations, common uses, procedures, terminology, and applications to marine safety in a clearly outlined, user-friendly format. Marine Safety examines such tools as Pareto Analysis, Checklist Analysis, Relative Ranking/Risk Indexing, Change Analysis, What-if Analysis, Hazard and Operability, Fault Tree Analysis, and Event and Causal Factor Charting. In addition, Marine Safety examines key factors for choosing risk assessment methods and suggest risk assessment approaches to support different types of decision making, depending on each situation. Examples of common marine-oriented situations, illustrative charts, graphs, and diagrams are included for easy understanding.

Book Apply Safety Risk and Reliability Analysis of Marine System

Download or read book Apply Safety Risk and Reliability Analysis of Marine System written by Dr. Oladokun S. Olanrewaju and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary time has seen alarming environmental revolt that is calls for attention and concern about the biosphere world, a condition that calls for need to use advantage of human improved knowledge and civilization in science engineering to develop proactive, efficient and predictive based system that meet reliability and sustainability requirement as well to reduce uncertainty components of system design. Proactive based philosophy under safety and environmental framework should be exercise on all level of system life cycle, including design, construction, operation and disposal. Selection of all element of the life cycle should be responsibly done and pollution impact of the system to the environment and community should be mitigated. The book present application of risk and reliability analysis to various cases of marine system and subsystem, application of risk method ranging from qualitative, quantitative to simulation and analytical approach is presented.

Book Evaluation of Safety Factors with Respect to Ocean Disposal of Waste Materials

Download or read book Evaluation of Safety Factors with Respect to Ocean Disposal of Waste Materials written by Thomas F. Zapatka and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, waste materials too toxic or hazardous for disposal on land or in estuaries have customarily been disposed of at sea. Assessment of the risk and consequent environmental harm to the oceans is essential if ocean dumping is to be continued. The author has surveyed the available literature, bioassay studies, and pertinent research concerning chronic effects and the risk they impose on the marine ecosystem. The main purpose of this study was to investigate and define the correlations between acute and chronic toxicities for known hazardous materials. This relationship is vital for the determination of an appropriate safety factor to be used in evaluating allowable discharges or concentrations in the marine environment. The variables that the author defines to be of most importance are: stage of development, concentration of toxicant, time of exposure, specific or non-specific reactions, lifetime of the compound, reactions with other chemicals, and bioaccumulation. The author has determined the ranges of ratios for different conditions and situations or at least the ratios of acute to chronic toxicities for various classes of materials. This will permit the proper scientific thought to be given for the safety factors needed to protect our marine environment.
