This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada’s economic and social development has benefited immensely from centuries of marine shipping. Today, the industry supports economies from coast to coast to coast, shipping hundreds of millions of tonnes of cargo, ranging from fuels to food, to consumer goods lining store shelves. The shipping industry is important to the livelihood of Canadians, but has also faced increased public scrutiny in recent years. The risks associated with opening the Arctic to greater ship traffic, increasing marine shipments of oil from Canada’s oil sands, and the growth in vessel size, especially of container ships, have all contributed to this discussion. Recognizing the need for consensus-building research in this area, the Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping asked the Council of Canadian Academies to convene an expert workshop to identify the risks associated with commercial marine shipping in major Canadian shipping regions. The final workshop report, Commercial Marine Shipping Accidents: Understanding the Risks in Canada, identifies the risks of commercial marine shipping accidents across Canada’s regions and for different cargo types, while highlighting gaps in understanding and areas for further research. The workshop report brings together perspectives from academia, government, and industry and is informed by evidence from a survey of the marine shipping community and an extensive review of the existing literature. It can be used as a tool for policy-makers to help inform decisions related to managing the risks of commercial marine shipping accidents. Overall, this workshop report seeks to contribute to a national dialogue about acceptable levels of risk in commercial marine shipping.

Book Governance of Arctic Shipping

Download or read book Governance of Arctic Shipping written by Aldo Chircop and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is a result of the Dalhousie-led research project Safe Navigation and Environment Protection, supported by a grant from the Ocean Frontier Institute’s the Canada First Research Excellent Fund (CFREF). The book focuses on Arctic shipping and investigates how ocean change and anthropogenic impacts affect our understanding of risk, policy, management and regulation for safe navigation, environment protection, conflict management between ocean uses, and protection of Indigenous peoples’ interests. A rapidly changing Arctic as a result of climate change and ice loss is rendering the North more accessible, providing new opportunities while producing impacts on the Arctic. The book explores ideas for enhanced governance of Arctic shipping through risk-based planning, marine spatial planning and scaling up shipping standards for safety, environment protection and public health.

Book Technology and Safety of Marine Systems

Download or read book Technology and Safety of Marine Systems written by J. Wang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-07-22 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally society has regulated hazardous industries by detailed references to engineering codes, standards and hardware requirements. These days a risk-based approach is adopted. Risk analysis involves identifying hazards, categorizing the risks, and providing the necessary decision support to determine the necessary arrangements and measures to reach a "safe" yet economical operating level. When adopting such an approach the abundance of techniques available to express risk levels can often prove confusing and inadequate. This highly practical guide to safety and risk analysis in Marine Systems not only adds to the current techniques available, but more importantly identifies instances where traditional techniques fall short. Uncertainties that manifest within risk analysis are highlighted and alternative solutions presented. In addition to risk analysis techniques this book addresses influencing elements including: reliability, Maintenance Decision making and Human error. The highly practical approach of this title ensures it is accessible to the widest possible audience

Book Canadian Oceans Policy

Download or read book Canadian Oceans Policy written by Don M. McRae and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with Canada's oceans management policies since the conclusion of the 1982 Convention of the Law of the Sea. That Convention set out a jurisdictional framework for the management of the world's oceans, but it did not provide states with precise guidance on all the issues that can arise. As a state with one of the world's longest coastlines, Canada was one of the principal beneficiaries under the 1982 Convention regime. A study of Canadian policy is particularly significant, as Canadian oceans management places in relief many of the difficult questions yet to be resolved.
