Cheap motels, cheaper booze, easy sex and young men with uncertain futures disrupted the life of rural Lenoir County. However, civilians and soldiers got along. That is, until a soldier hired a Marine to murder the soldiers beautiful wife, and in a tragic case of mistaken identity the Marine murdered his co-conspirators teenage daughter. Then the situation changed. Set against the backdrop of the wartime small-town South, The Puppeteer is a classic tale of murder for hire, mistaken identity, cunning betrayal and exacting revenge, during a period that came to be known as The Fifteen Days in the Summer of 1943.

Book The Whitest Wall

  • Author : Jodee Kulp
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2008-09
  • ISBN : 9780963707260
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book The Whitest Wall written by Jodee Kulp and published by . This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What you don't know won't hurt you is a lie. A big lie. Knowledge is power, and the power found withiin these pages is undeniable. When Jodee Kulp began to explain to the insidiousness of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome I did not get it. I could not sympathize. It was like an out of control virus taking over the world. But when I began reading the life stories of the characters in this book I became educated vicariously, even without knowing it. Full, rich, deep personalities walk through your imagination as close as your own family as this epic-like volume clings to your heart. You will want to pick up the phone and call each one to say, "I'm right here, and I understand, or watch out." The identity of these characters becomes so personal you just know you are reading their memoirs. Fiction, as C.S. Lewis would say, adds to reality, not just describes it. It enriches daily life and irrigates the deserts of our lives. I found "Whitest Wall" so compelling I wanted to jump to the end, but so glad I didn't. Life is complex and lives are intertwined to a greater degree than we think. We tend to be myopic, critical, judgmental, and basically self-absorbed, or is that just me? Jodee Kulp is so adept at casting the players in Whitest Wall and so passionate a story teller you will look at your neighbor through different eyes than ever before.

Book THE HAPPY YEARS

Download or read book THE HAPPY YEARS written by Larry B. Fullen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ashville enjoyed prosperity after the harsh and lean years of the Depression and WWII. Predominately, low-middle income, there were no social or economic divisions, all were rich in mutual respect and pride of community. As youth, the homogenic culture and ethnicity of our small-town was not recognized. The focus was on the Thursday night dances in the park, the Fourth of July celebration, and winning county sports championships. Teachers were neighbors, compassionate and dedicated to their profession. There was a sense of freedom, but is something was wrong or not to expectations, parents would know about it immediately. An attitude of optimism prevailed, unaware that Ashville, like many rural communities, was not realizing the growth of the metropolitan and industrial areas, and that for the younger generation the future was not likely to be in Ashville. Later in life we understood the blessings and meaning of small-town values, the unique shared experiences, and lasting friendships from growing up in Ashville.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young man who went by the name of Jay Cee lived in a small town in Pennsylvania. He worked as a carpenters helper at a job that paid less than a dollar an hour above minimum wage. Teaching Sunday school was a passion of his. He arrived in Detroit one day to attend a four-day religious retreat along with twenty thousand other Christian believers from several midwestern states. Due to an incredible set of circumstances, he found himself at the Detroit Lions training facility in Allen Park, Michigan, a nearby suburb of Detroit. In an even more bizarre twist of fate, he found himself practicing with the Detroit Lions football team at the position of quarterback. He dazzled everyone on the field, especially the head coach. His pinpoint passing, his ball handling, and his elusiveness in the pocket were nothing short of amazing! However, he had absolutely no desire to play professional football. He was very satisfied living and working in that small town and teaching Sunday school there. No amount of money offered to him could make him change his mind. One evening, Jay Cee attended a class at the retreat during which the instructor told them, God wants us to live up to our potential by using the talents He has given us. Sometimes, we have to step outside of our comfort zones before we can recognize what those talents are. That made him realize that perhaps living in a small town and working for minimum wage was not his destiny; maybe it was time for him to broaden his horizons.
