Book Margaret Helfand Architects

Download or read book Margaret Helfand Architects written by Margaret Helfand and published by Work in Progress. This book was released on 1999 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a collection of projects developed during the 1990s, Margaret Helfand Architects argues for an architecture of logic, simplicity, and sensuality. Presented chronologically, nineteen projects ranging from showrooms, residences, academic buildings, parks, and functional objects are examined in photographs and texts along the three axes fundamental to the firm's work: geometry, structure, and materials. Basic materials such as steel, wood, glass, and stone are used with a minimum of transformation, allowing their inherent colors, textures, and structural properties to create visual stimulation. Seen are such diverse works as Vertical House on a Trapezoidal Site, Octagon: Structure and Landscape, and Apartment for Art and Music, as well as the Time Out New York offices, Williamsburg Community Center, and a child development center. This architecture points to a future in which buildings will rely on their own function, materiality, and craftsmanship to express their time in history. A theoretical context for the work is provided in an essay by Paola Antonelli, associate curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, along with photographs by the acclaimed architectural photographer Paul Warchol.

Taking up the challenge of refuting the gender divide and welcoming intelligent input, from whatever source, will benefit a profession which, by definition, is serving the people from whom it works and therefore needs to operate within a collaborative framework, one offering equal opportunities according to talent rather than gender."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the United States, the practice of interior design has been considered women's territory, regarded by the majority of architects, most of whom are male, as a lesser discipline. In the past 150 years, however, designing women have made their mark, first as domestic decorators and since the late 1940s as interior designers responsible for the planning, furnishing, and execution of the interior architecture of multimillion dollar corporate, financial, and other "important" environments for thousands of people." "Women of Design profiles thirty-two of these working women: the first generation of American women to dominate the world of commercial interior design, a multibillion dollar industry in the United States. They have overcome gender discrimination to establish themselves successfully as heads of their own independent practices or as valued principals in some of the largest interior design firms in the country. They have excelled as creators of spaces and products and as business people, serving as models for and opening the doors to a new generation of American women interior designers. Their designs for a variety of projects, ranging from retail, office, commercial, hotel, and restaurant environments, as well as residential gems, stand as proof of the immense pool of talented women who have emerged as leaders in a particular industry. Some of those included have also entered the world of design education, serving as deans and teachers at prominent design schools, molding and training future talents." "These remarkable women designers from every corner of the nation offer insights into their struggle to achieve success, revealing their personal and professional philosophies. Photographs of some of their finest achievements are included in this colorful and groundbreaking volume that serves as a testament to the enormous achievements American women have made in this field during the past century."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Lives in Architecture

Download or read book Lives in Architecture written by Peter Cook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Cook has been a pivotal figure within the architecture world for over half a century. He first came to international renown in the 1960s as a founder of the radical, experimental group Archigram, winners of the 2002 RIBA Royal Gold Medal. He is also former Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London, and Emeritus Professor and former Chair of the Bartlett School of Architecture (University College London). Suffused with Peter’s infectious energy, enthusiasm and charm, this intriguing memoir explores major themes in architecture through the lens of his life and work. Taking the reader on a journey through his colourful and wide-ranging career, it touches on his early years and architectural education, his relationships with key figures within the architecture community and his work teaching and lecturing internationally. It also provides an inside account of his leadership of the Bartlett, for which he is frequently credited as a central figure in rescuing the reputation of a once-ailing, now world-famous, school of architecture. Featuring full-colour images of his most famous drawings, including Archigram’s ‘Plug-in City’, and built works, such as the Kunsthaus Graz in Austria and the Vienna Economics and Business University’s Department of Law and Central Administration Buildings, this book is a window into the life of one of architecture’s most celebrated rebels.
