Download or read book MARGA written by Jeevan Gopalan and published by Jeevan Gopalan. This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hybrid historic space adventure with romance, espionage & with real science. Marga is a captivating historical fiction novel. Dr. Ingrid finds out that the DNA strands belonging to her and the person she now calls "Kigeni" (an alien in Swahili) are distinct from any DNA strands found on Earth. She and her life partner discover that these DNA strands had coding sequences artificially added to humans at least 80,000 years ago. They embark on an exploration and discovery journey into the evolution of Earth and the evolution of life on Earth as well as life elsewhere in the Solar System when Dr. Stephen uses his software and knowledge of ciphers to decipher the encrypted code in DNA. They succeed to access the knowledge of existence of a sentient, intelligent species of aliens that once called Earth home for millions of years before humans diverged and departed some 80,000 years ago. Science fiction fans will enjoy this book because the author skillfully combines romance, espionage, and the conflict between an advanced alien species and another hostile alien species to create a compelling science fiction story. However, what made them leave Earth, the only known habitat left to their species? What happened to them and where did they go? Their farewell to Earth was tearful because they were saying goodbye to some of their friends whose memories had been erased for a reason. Was this their last goodbye? Why do the couples hide this information from the public? It will be difficult for the readers to decide if what the author has written is an illusion or the real thing.
Download or read book Marga Richter written by Sharon Mirchandani and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-11-16 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length introduction to the life and works of significant American composer Marga Richter (born 1926), who has written more than one hundred works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, dance, opera, voice, chorus, piano, organ, and harpsichord. Still actively composing in her eighties, Richter is particularly known for her large-scale works performed by ensembles such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and for other pieces performed by prominent artists including pianist Menahem Pressler, conductor Izler Solomon, and violinist Daniel Heifetz. Interspersing consideration of Richter's musical works with discussion of her life, her musical style, and the origins and performances of her works, Sharon Mirchandani documents a successful composer's professional and private life throughout the twentieth century. Covering Richter's formative years, her influences, and the phases of her career from the 1950s to the present, Mirchandani closely examines Richter's many interesting, attractive musical works that draw inspiration from distinctly American, Irish/English, and Asian sources. Drawing extensively on interviews with the composer, Mirchandani also provides detailed descriptions of Richter's scores and uses reviews and other secondary sources to provide contexts for her work, including their relationship to modern dance, to other musical styles, and to 1970s feminism.

Book excerpt: Over the past 30 years, the world has seen great social improvements. Technology has been developing at an enormous pace and is helping to solve our most pressing social and environmental challenges. Yet, despite this success, our current model of development is still deeply problematic. Natural disasters triggered by climate change have doubled since the 1980s, violence and armed conflict now cost more than 13 percent of GDP, social inequality and youth unemployment is worsening around the world, and climate change threatens the global population with tremendous environmental as well as social problems. Using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a framework, this book sets out how business and capital now have a real opportunity to help resolve these problems. With clear and plentiful examples and cases of how businesses are making a difference, relevant facts and figures to support the cases, and inspiring and instructional information on how businesses can create sustainable value, this highly readable book is a must-read for businesses (large and small) that wish to genuinely support the delivery of the SDGs. The Paris Climate Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) drive change and offer a narrative and an opportunity to all to speak in one language on sustainability. They provide us with a clear set of targets for 2030. Through following the SDGs, opportunities abound for business and capital to unlock markets which offer endless potential for profit while at the same time working towards the Sustainable Development Goals. This book illustrates for business how to make the much-needed Trillion Dollar Shift.

Download or read book Intelligent Love written by Marga Vicedo and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the History of Science Society's 2022 Davis Prize How one mother challenged the medical establishment and misconceptions about autistic children and their parents In the early 1960s, Massachusetts writer and homemaker Clara Park and her husband took their 3-year-old daughter, Jessy, to a specialist after noticing that she avoided connection with others. Following the conventional wisdom of the time, the psychiatrist diagnosed Jessy with autism and blamed Clara for Jessy’s isolation. Experts claimed Clara was the prototypical “refrigerator mother,” a cold, intellectual parent who starved her children of the natural affection they needed to develop properly. Refusing to accept this, Clara decided to document her daughter’s behaviors and the family’s engagement with her. In 1967, she published her groundbreaking memoir challenging the refrigerator mother theory and carefully documenting Jessy’s development. Clara’s insights and advocacy encouraged other parents to seek education and support for their autistic children. Meanwhile, Jessy would work hard to expand her mother’s world, and ours. Drawing on previously unexamined archival sources and firsthand interviews, science historian Marga Vicedo illuminates the story of how Clara Park and other parents fought against medical and popular attitudes toward autism while presenting a rich account of major scientific developments in the history of autism in the US. Intelligent Love is a fierce defense of a mother’s right to love intelligently, the value of parents’ firsthand knowledge about their children, and an individual’s right to be valued by society.
