Download or read book A Manual of Cataloguing Practice written by K. G. B. Bakewell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Manual of Cataloguing Practice is a text on cataloguing and covers topics ranging from the major cataloguing codes to the subject catalogue, the name catalogue, and cataloguing of special materials. Physical forms of catalogue are also considered, along with the filing and arrangement of catalogue entries; centralized and cooperative cataloguing; the organization of cataloguing; and the relation of cataloguing to modern methods of information retrieval. This manual is comprised of 16 chapters and begins with an overview of the nature and purpose of catalogues, as well as the history of cataloguing and catalogues. The discussion then turns to the development and application of the major cataloguing codes, including the British Museum Cataloguing Rules; the Vatican Code; the American Library Association Rules 1949; and the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 1967. Some particular problems of author-title cataloguing are considered, together with the solutions suggested by some of the major codes and the practices of some individual libraries. External guides (instructions for the use of the catalogue) and internal guides (""signposts"" within the catalogue) are also discussed. Finally, the future of cataloguing is examined. This book will be a useful resource for practicing cataloguers and librarians as well as students of librarianship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this optimistic new book, librarians examine how changes in society, the information industry, and libraries require iconoclastic thinking and acting on the part of the information specialists to take maximum advantage of the opportunities that are present to better the profession, the professionals, and services to their patrons. The focus of the volume is on managing functions typically associated with technical services. Recent changes to library functions such as the changed roles of managers and the necessity for fund-raising as a method of obtaining basic operating funds are discussed fully. Running across the varied chapters are recurring themes such as the need for flexibility in staffing and organizational structures, looking at the traditional in new ways, and convergence and union. The chapters, written by experienced academic librarians, will be of interest to both managers of libraries and to those who are concerned with how the libraries are managed. Students of library science will find this an invaluable guide to gaining a deeper knowledge of the changes in technical services, and how they relate to the general public coming into the library.
Download or read book Access Services written by Gillian M. McCombs and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a close look at the recent changing emphasis from collections to access, and from document description to document delivery. As the automation of library processes has moved from technical services to reference services, the roles of the professionals working in those capacities have changed dramatically. Library administrators who are looking to redeploy resources will gain helpful insights from the experiences of librarians who have already redirected their organizations. This helpful volume will be of tremendous assistance in redefining the traditional roles of reference and technical librarians. Access Services offers new insights into the movement from bibliographic access to information access that is reshaping reference services today. Informative discussions on topics such as cross-training experiments, revised organizational structures, the new role of the bibliographic utilities, library school education for the redefined professional, and changes in cataloging codes reveal what impact this trend has for librarians, services, and patrons.
