Book Adventures in Bookbinding

Download or read book Adventures in Bookbinding written by Jeannine Stein and published by Quarry Books. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each project in this book combines bookbinding with a specific craft such as quilting, jewelry making, or polymer clay, and offer levels of expertise: basic, novice, and expert. Illustrated step-by-step instructions and photographs demonstrate how to construct the cover pages, and a unique binding technique, easy enough for a beginner to master. Each project also features two other versions with the same binding geared to those with more or less experience. The novice version is for those who have no knowledge of the craft and want shortcuts, but love the look. For the quilter's book, for example, vintage quilt pieces become the covers so all that's needing in the binding. Or if you're interested in wool felting use an old sweater. This offers great opportunities for upcycling. The expert version is for those who have a great deal of knowledge and proficiency of a certain craft - the master art quilter, for example. For this version, an expert guest artist has created the cover and the author has created the binding. This offers yet another creative opportunity - the collaborative project. Since crafters often get involved with round-robins and other shared endeavors, this will show them yet another way to combine their skills. No other craft book offers the possibilities and challenges that Adventures in Bookbinding does. Readers will return to it again and again to find inspiration and ideas.

Book An Anthology of Decorated Papers

Download or read book An Anthology of Decorated Papers written by P. J. M. Marks and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable and beautiful book brings together a collection of decorated papers dating from the 16th to the 20th century. They were produced for a wide variety of uses: as wrappers and endpapers for books, as the backing for playing cards, and even as linings for chests and cases. Some decorated papers were used as humble pictures for display in churches and the home; some were sold as souvenirs to pilgrims; and others were used merely as wrappings for foodstuffs such as gingerbread and chocolate. What unites all the papers in the book is the richness of their ornamentation and the thin, flexible characteristics of the original sheets. They are all further united by having been collected by Olga Hirsch (1889-1968), a trained bookbinder who left her collection of some 3,500 papers to the British Library, where they remain one of the largest and most diverse collections of decorated papers in the world. This anthology brings together some of the most exquisite examples. It will delight and inspire designers, bibliophiles and anyone with a love of pattern and decoration.

Book The Mysterious Marbler

Download or read book The Mysterious Marbler written by James Sumner and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limited to 300 copies, reprinted from the scarce Bird & Bull private press edition of 1976. This printing of James Sumner's 1854 marbling manual includes a new preface by Richard J. Wolfe. A further note on the English marbling tradition and thirteen tipped in original examples of marbled papers by Wolfe have also been added. The historical introduction, the text of Sumner's pamphlet, and the 1976 endnote appear exactly as they do in the first reprinting by Bird & Bull Press in 1976. Sumner discusses the little-known history of paper marbling prior to the nineteenth century. Marbling was a secretive and well guarded craft. Masters of the profession passed on their knowledge reluctantly to a very limited few, creating a monopoly on the trade. For this reason, printed information on marbling was extremely limited prior to the nineteenth century. The expansion of the trade, including new ingredients and methods, created a need for the recording of exact patterns and recipes in order to produce marbling in an efficient and precise manner. Therefore, in the 1850s, printed work on marbling began to appear more readily. One of the first manuals on marbling was published in 1853 by Charles Woolnough, and Sumner's much smaller pamphlet could be considered a reinforcement to this earlier work. Sumner's text includes specific information on various types of marbling and precise recipes for their creation.Sumner's original pamphlet had no exhibit samples attached. Wolfe added thirteen samples of marbled paper that were possibly created by Sumner himself, or by John Hargreaves, his associate, for the 1976 printing. The cover is a facsimile reproduction of an original nineteenth-century English marbled paper in the editor's collection.
