Book Tanjavur Painting of the Maratha Period

Download or read book Tanjavur Painting of the Maratha Period written by Jaya Appasamy and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 1980 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a general account of the painting of the period when Tanjavur was under Maratha rule. It was a time of turmoil and change, notable for the strands of many different cultures which met and stimulated art in this small territory. Numerous forms arose, some traditional, others showing the assimilation of contemporary ideas. It was an exotic heterogeneous flowering reflecting the demands of different kinds of patrons and the versatility, skill and open-mindedness of the artists. The painting of this period is dealt with showing its connections to South Indian Art in general and also its responses to the impact of Western ideas. It is a tribute to the people of the South and their traditions that even in a period of comparative instability, wars, famine and confusion there was still a need and a desire for objects of art. The era is characteristically eclectic but its painting mirrors the faith, the values and the requirements of the people. So far the visual arts of this period have not received much attention. It is hoped that this study will lead one to see that art was an important facet of southern culture as a whole

Download or read book Ty gar ja written by William J. Jackson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tyāgarāa (1767-1847) is undoubtedly South India’s most celebrated singer-saint. This book attempts to deepen our understanding of Tyāgarāa’s life and music with fresh insights. It explores Tyāgarāa’s philosophy of music and provides excellent English translations of a hundred and sixty of his greatest lyrics. For the first time in Tyāgarāa scholarship, the saint’s life and works have been contextualized in a sociohistorical framework. The author provides an exhaustive sociological analysis of Tyāgarāa’s Thanjavur and establishes links between Tyāgarāa’s works and the troubled history of his time. He analyses the making of saints in different religions and draws parallels between legends of saints built over decades.

Book The History Of The Mahrattas

Download or read book The History Of The Mahrattas written by James Grant Duff and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of India reached its pre-British Raj height under the Maratha Empire or the Maratha Confederacy which was an Indian imperial power that existed from 1674 to 1818. At its peak, the empire covered much of India, encompassing a territory of over 2.8 million km2. The Marathas are credited for ending the Mughal rule in India. The Marathas were a yeoman warrior group from the western Deccan that rose to prominence during the rule of the Adil Shahi dynasty and Ahmadnagar Sultanate. The empire was founded by Shivaji Bhosle, who formally crowned himself Chhatrapati ("Emperor") with Raigad as his capital in 1674, and successfully fought against the Mughal Empire. The Maratha Empire waged war for 27 years with the Mughals from 1681 to 1707, which became the longest war in the history of India. Shivaji, pioneered "Shiva sutra" or Ganimi Kava (guerrilla tactics), which leveraged strategic factors like demographics, speed, surprise and focused attack to defeat his bigger and more powerful enemies. After the death of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the empire expanded greatly under the rule of the Peshwas. The empire at its peak stretched from Tamil Nadu in the south, to Peshawar (modern-day Pakistan) on the Afghanistan border in the north, and Bengal and Andaman Islands in east. In 1761, the Maratha army lost the Third Battle of Panipat to Abdali’s Afghan Durrani Empire, which halted their imperial expansion. Ten years after Panipat, young Madhavrao Peshwa reinstated the Maratha authority over North India. In a bid to effectively manage the large empire, he gave semi-autonomy to the strongest of the knights, which created a confederacy of Maratha states. In 1775, the British East India Company intervened in a succession struggle in Pune, which became the First Anglo-Maratha War. Marathas remained the preeminent power in India until their defeat in the Second and Third Anglo-Maratha wars (1805–1818), which left the British East India Company in control of most of India.

Download or read book The New Cambridge Modern History Volume 7 The Old Regime 1713 1763 written by J. O. Lindsay and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1957 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume surveys the political, military and diplomatic history of a period of changing alliances and limited and gentlemanly but frequent wars. It gives particular weight to the emergence of Prussia and Russia as European Powers and to the rivalry of France and England in America, in India and on the high seas. The economic background to these national fortunes is of increasing international trade, technological progress and colonialisation. Socially, European society slowly evolved from the domination of the aristocracy to that of urban populations and bourgeois administrators. Intellectually, the culture of Europe took on what are recognized as specifically eighteenth-century forms and ideals. From the point of view of world history this period saw the confirmation of European pre-eminence and dominion.
