Ferguson in the 1960s and 1970s, it brings together an inventory of maps and views of the city of Derry and its environs, which Ferguson was researching and compiling until his death in 1972. By then his work was virtually complete with all his entries drafted. In 2003 the project was adopted by the Royal Irish Academy and published the following year. Special maps such as the Phillips map from 1689 are reproduced in full in this publication. This book makes available the Ferguson manuscript held in the archives in Belfast, PRONI, which for so long was used by scholars and local historians. Foreword by J.H. Book excerpt: These passenger lists, which cover the period of the Irish Famine and its aftermath, identify the emigrants' "actual places of residence", as well as their port of departure and nationality. Essentially business records, the lists were developed from the order books of two main passenger lines operating out of Londonderry--J.& J. Cooke (1847-67) and William McCorkell & Co. (1863-71). Both sets of records provide the emigrant's name, age, and address, and the name of the ship. The Cooke lists provide the ship's destination and year of sailing, while the McCorkell lists provide the date engaged and the scheduled sailing date. Altogether 27,495 passengers are identified.

Book excerpt: Margaret Anna Cusack (1832-1899), who also wrote as MFC, Sister, Mary Frances Cusack, and Vigilant, was a Catholic nun and the founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. She was a strong advocate for the poor and oppressed, especially women. At the age of 29 she was received into the Catholic Church and immediatey joined the Poor Clares in Newry, County Down. During her stay at Kenmare she dedicated herself to her writings, which ranged from biographies of saints to pamphlets on social issues. She wrote 35 books, including many popular, pious and sentimental texts on private devotions, poems, Irish history and biography and founded Kenmare Publications, through which 200,000 volumes of her works were issued in under ten years. Chief amongst her works are: A Student's History of Ireland (1870), Woman's Work in Modern Society (1872), The Liberator (1872), The Pilgrim's Way to Heaven (1873), The Book of the Blessed Ones (1874), A Nun's Advice to Her Girls (1877) and St. Patrick, St. Columba, and St. Bridget (1877). Two autobiographies are The Nun of Kenmare (1888) and The Story of My Life (1893).
