Book Deep Maps and Spatial Narratives

Download or read book Deep Maps and Spatial Narratives written by David J. Bodenhamer and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep maps are finely detailed, multimedia depictions of a place and the people, buildings, objects, flora, and fauna that exist within it and which are inseparable from the activities of everyday life. These depictions may encompass the beliefs, desires, hopes, and fears of residents and help show what ties one place to another. A deep map is a way to engage evidence within its spatio-temporal context and to provide a platform for a spatially-embedded argument. The essays in this book investigate deep mapping and the spatial narratives that stem from it. The authors come from a variety of disciplines: history, religious studies, geography and geographic information science, and computer science. Each applies the concepts of space, time, and place to problems central to an understanding of society and culture, employing deep maps to reveal the confluence of actions and evidence and to trace paths of intellectual exploration by making use of a new creative space that is visual, structurally open, multi-media, and multi-layered.

Book Art Maps and Cities

Download or read book Art Maps and Cities written by Gloria Lanci and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-25 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an original study on how contemporary artists are exploring urban spaces through mapping. Despite a long history of representations of cities in maps, and the relationships that can be envisaged between art maps and cities in the contemporary world, little research is dedicated to investigating how artists intervene in the realm of urban cartography. The research examines a century-old history of art maps and draws on academic debates challenging traditional notions of maps as scientific artefacts produced through accurate measurement and surveying. The potential of art maps to construct personal narratives, through contestation, embodiment and play, is analysed in the city context, where spaces are shaped by urban planning and design, political ideologies and socio-economic forces. Adopting an exploratory and interpretative research approach that investigates the confluence of theories originated in different domains, this book conducts the reader to discover what artistic practices can bring into a more creative, while inquisitive, understanding of cities. A series of semi-structured interviews with visual artists, enquiring how they apprehend, process and re-create urban spaces in artworks, explores cartographic process and methods in visual art practices in the twenty first century, which incorporates digital technologies and critical thinking.

Book Two Wheels and a Map

Download or read book Two Wheels and a Map written by Bob Neubauer and published by Outdoor Action Publishing. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before smart phones and GPS devices simplified bike touring, cyclists were crossing the roads of this country, equipped with little more than two wheels and a map. This is the tale of one such rider who tackled the East Coast in the early '90s. Leaving behind an unfulfilling job, he loaded up his bike and set off, meandering along rural back roads, meeting strangers, listening to their stories and enjoying their unexpected hospitality. Not everything went as planned, though. Unforeseen circumstances forced him in directions he hadn't anticipated; searing summer heat drained his energy; and he spent many a nervous night bedding down where he didn't belong. His trip touched the tip of failure-yet succeeded in ways he hadn't imagined. Through it all, the people who crossed his path, sometimes offering only a kind word, gave him the inspiration he needed to persevere. Two Wheels and a Map details Bob Neubauer's two-part solo bike journey from Bangor, Maine, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His often-amusing observations on the people and predicaments he encountered along the way give the book a lighthearted tone as it chronicles his life on the open road. Bob Neubauer is also the author of Alone in Austria: A Solo Bike Trip Across Austria. It chronicles his two-wheeled journey from Salzburg to Vienna, Austria, visiting quaint villages, castle ruins and ancient monasteries.
