Book excerpt: Excerpt from Map of the World The photographic negatives of the map, made in Feld kirch by the photographer Alois Gniidinger under the direction and constant supervision of Professor Gottfried Richen, S. J were sent to Mr. Edward Bierstadt, New York City, and in his establishment, which is distinguished for the excellence of its work, the map has been artistically reproduced, faithful to the original in every detail. The printing of the map and of the descriptive text has been under the supervision of Professor Stevenson. The ex pense of the undertaking is jointly carried by The Amer ican Geographical Society and The Hispanic Society of America. To these societies the editors here express their cordial thanks. It is fortunate that the outlines and the legends of the map are little in ured. While the missing parts of the pic torial ornamentations, and of the two large legends in par ticular, might easily have been restored, in the interest of science it was thought this should not be done. To afford a clearer conception of the whole to those who have not the privilege of examining the original, we have added this brief explanatory and descriptive text. Notwithstanding the small scale, Fig. I is sufficiently large to show the con dition of the map before it was detached from the coarse linen. It is interesting to note that labels had been pasted on the map bearing such names as Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia. Evidently the map did service in geograph ical instruction when its information was found not to be up to date.
