Book excerpt: A once-subtracted form of the Low equation for the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude is derived, with PCAC used to define the amplitude when one pion is off the mass shell. The static approximation is not made and both the seagull terms and the antinucleon contribution (z-graphs) are retained. The theory is applied to calculate the S-wave amplitudes in the elastic scattering region. Good agreement is found with the phase shift fits to the data when we use mod(g/sub .pi./(4M2)) = 11.69 and 25.5 MeV for the .pi.N sigma-commutator. The implications of this work for the analysis of low-energy elastic scattering of pions from nuclei are discussed. In particular, it is pointed out how this work establishes the presence of a Laplacian term in the pion-nucleus optical potential with a magnitude that is fixed from the value of the sigma-commutator.

The main problems at the level of meson exchange physics have been solved, and we have an effective field theory using a phenomenological interaction pioneered by Achim Schwenk and Scott Bogner, which is nearly universally accepted as a unique low-momentum interaction that includes all experimental data to date.This understanding is based on a multi-step development in which different scientific insights and a wide range of physical and mathematical methodologies fed into each other. It is best appreciated by looking at the different 'steps along the way', starting with the pioneering work of Brueckner and his collaborators that was just as necessary and important as the insightful masterly improvements to Brueckner's theory by Hans Bethe and his students. Moving on from there, the off-shell effects that bedeviled Bethe's work — which had resulted in the 1963 Reference Spectrum Method — were treated relatively accurately by introducing an energy gap between initial bound states and an intermediate state. With their influential 1967 paper, Brown and Kuo prepared the effective field theory. Later, the introduction of 'Brown-Rho scaling' deepened understanding of saturation in the many-body system and fed directly into recent work on carbon-14 dating.

Attention is focused on the interaction with and propagation through the nucleus of pions and?'s. The approach followed basically consists of viewing the?-nucleus system, formed by pion excitation of a nucleon, as a doorway for the pion-nucleus reaction. Analysis of the interacting?-nucleus system then leads to new dynamical information summarized in a complex?-nucleus interaction potential. The associated nuclear medium corrections to? propagation, related in more conventional language to higher-order corrections in the pion optical potential, are so large as to demand consideration in quantitative studies of nuclear structure with pions. After a discussion of the basic scale parameters characterizing intermediate-energy pion-nucleus interactions, the author discusses the theoretical framework and the extraction of? interaction parameters from inclusive pion-nucleus cross sections. More detailed tests of the picture, such as elastic scattering angular distributions, are then discussed. Finally, some implications for intermediate-energy photoreactions are outlined. 11 figures.
