Book excerpt: Emily Dickinson's fragments, which appear at a late moment in the trajectory of her writing, are essentially private texts, belonging to the space of creation rather than communication. Never prepared for publication, perhaps never even meant to be read, they are symptoms of the processes of composition, data of the work of writing. Radical Scatters is an electronic archive of eighty-two documents carrying fragmentary texts written by Dickinson between c. 1870 and 1886, as well as fifty-four poems, letters, and other writings with direct links to the fragments. Conceding the inadequacy of conventional scholarly paradigms to represent them, Marta Werner has taken advantage of the capabilities of computer technology to conceive and develop an alternative model of presentation, a new paradigm that allows scholars to work with Dickinson's texts in unedited form and to draw on them in a nonlinear manner. The archive comprises six bodies of materials: high-quality facsimiles of the fragments and related texts; diplomatic transcriptions that display the documents's spatial dynamics; SGML-marked electronic texts; images of other documents drawn from the realm of Dickinson's late papers; various critical paratexts; and maps and code, type, and hand libraries. All of the primary materials in the archive are organized for full electronic search and analysis. When opened as the South Carolina College library in 1840 it was the first freestanding academic library building in the United States. Designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument, it is built in the Greek Revival style and features a replica of the reading room that once housed Thomas Jefferson's personal library in the second Library of Congress. When the college built a larger main library (now known as the McKissick Museum) in 1940, the Mills building became the home of "Caroliniana"—published and unpublished materials relating to the history, literature, and culture of South Carolina. Through a dedicated mining of the resources this library has held, art historian John M. Bryan crafted this comprehensive narrative history of the building's design, construction, and renovations, which he enhanced with personal entries from the diaries and letters of the students, professors, librarians, and politicians who crossed its threshold. To Save the Soul of America, the seventh volume of the anticipated fourteen-volume edition, provides an unprecedented glimpse into King’s early relationship with President John F. Kennedy and his efforts to remain relevant in a protest movement growing increasingly massive and militant. Following Kennedy’s inauguration in January 1961, King’s high expectations for the new administration gave way to disappointment as the president hesitated to commit to comprehensive civil rights legislation. As the initial Freedom Ride catapulted King into the national spotlight in May, tensions with student activists affiliated with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) were exacerbated after King refused to participate in subsequent freedom rides. These tensions became more evident after King accepted an invitation in December 1961 to help the SNCC-supported Albany Movement in southwest Georgia. King’s arrests in Albany prompted widespread national press coverage for the protests there, but he left with minimal tangible gains. During 1962 King worked diligently to improve the effectiveness of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) by hiring new staff and initiating grassroots outreach. King also increased his influence by undertaking an overcrowded schedule of appearances, teaching a course at Morehouse College, and participating in an additional round of protests in Albany during July 1962. As King confronted these difficult challenges, he learned valuable lessons that would later impact his efforts to desegregate Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963.
