Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to present a methodology by which long-term trends in actual industrial development can be identified. This would be applicable to a type of economic planning which recognizes that the economic system is constantly changing and that forces within the system continuously rationalize both the structure & the behaviour of the economy. The main purpose of the type of planning suggested by this report would be to identify ways the government could influence the rationalizing process of wealth production within the existing political-economic system. The report introduction presents an analogy in which the economy is likened to a living organism, discusses the dual nature of the economy, defines structural rationalization, and proposes a method for identifying (scanning) areas of poor rationalizing performance. The main section contains four research papers on the scanning process, focussing on the Manitoba manufacturing sector. Topics of the papers are: the structure of industry in Canada at the divisional level; trends in geographic concentration of manufacturing industries; the structure of manufacturing in Manitoba; and forecasting relative performance in manufacturers by province, with reference to Manitoba, using shift-share analysis and intersectoral flows analysis.

Download or read book Manufacturing Mennonites written by Janis Thiessen and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing Mennonites examines the efforts of Mennonite intellectuals and business leaders to redefine the group's ethno-religious identity in response to changing economic and social conditions after 1945. As the industrial workplace was one of the most significant venues in which competing identity claims were contested during this period, Janis Thiessen explores how Mennonite workers responded to such redefinitions and how they affected class relations. Through unprecedented access to extensive private company records, Thiessen provides an innovative comparison of three businesses founded, owned, and originally staffed by Mennonites: the printing firm Friesens Corporation, the window manufacturer Loewen, and the furniture manufacturer Palliser. Complemented with interviews with workers, managers, and business owners, Manufacturing Mennonites pioneers two important new trajectories for scholarship - how religion can affect business history, and how class relations have influenced religious history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manitoba is more than one of Canada's three prairie provinces. Encompassing 649,950 square kilometres, its territory ranges from Canadian Shield to grassland, parkland, and subarctic tundra. Its physical geography has been shaped by ice-age glaciers, while its human geography reflects the influences of its various inhabitants, from the First Nations who began arriving over 9,000 years ago, to its most recent immigrants. This fascinating range of geographical elements has given Manitoba a distinct identity and makes it a unique area for study. Geography of Manitoba is the first comprehensive guide to all aspects of the human and physical geography of this unique province. Representing the work of 47 scholars, and illustrated with over 200 maps, diagrams, and photographs, it is divided into four main sections, covering the major areas of the province's geography: Physical Background; People and Settlements; Resources and Industry; and Recreation. As well as studying historical developments, the contributors to Geography of Manitoba analyse recent political and economic events in the province, including the effect of federal and provincial elections and international trade agreements. They also comment on future prospects for the province, considering areas as diverse as resource management and climatic trends.
