The truth is that manufacturing workers get higher pay and more generous benefits than Americans in nonmanufacturing jobs, and these jobs have one of the largest multiplier effects in our economy. It's estimated that two-and-a-half additional jobs come from every one manufacturing job. People say that. Nobody pays any attention. It's tremendously important. It's like health care. The multiplier effect is huge. I don't think people appreciate that manufacturing is this country's principal source of R&D and innovation. Manufacturing firms perform approximately 70 percent of U.S. industry R&D, while accounting for only about 11 percent of the economy. So we must dig in. We must redouble our efforts to "make it in America." Manufacturing is critical, and it's critical to the national security.
