Yet conventional wisdom—born of the stagflation of the 1970s—holds that sustained low unemployment rates run the risk of triggering inflation. The last five years of the 1990s—in which unemployment plummeted and inflation remained low—called this conventional wisdom into question. The Roaring Nineties provides a thorough review of the exceptional economic performance of the late 1990s and asks whether it was due to a lucky combination of economic circumstances or whether the new economy has somehow wrought a lasting change in the inflation-safe rate of unemployment. Led by distinguished economists Alan Krueger and Robert Solow, a roster of twenty-six respected economic experts analyzes the micro- and macroeconomic factors that led to the unexpected coupling of low unemployment and low inflation. There are now more than 550 electronic manufacturing and supplier companies in ' Silicon Glen'. In terms of the contribution to the economy, electronics is by far the most valuable industry. Its value in 1996 was approximately £ 10billion and accounted for more than half of Scotland's exports. The major product groupings within the industry include: • PCs, laptops and workstations • Disk drives, cable harnessing • Printers, keyboards and peripherals • Semiconductor devices and PCBs • TV, VCRs, CDs, stereos and other consumer electronics • Cellular phones and telecommunications products • A TMs and funds transfer systems • Networking and security systems • Navigation and sonar systems • Microwave products • Power supplies • Software and compilers Many of these companies are multi-national OEMs, who came to Scotland as inward investing companies. Early inward investing companies were from USA, followed by companies from Japan, and more recently from Taiwan and Korea. An important segment of the industry is involved in the manufacture of computers, including IBM, Compaq, Digital and Sun. In fact approximately 40% of the PCs sold in Europe are built in Scotland. With five of the world's top eight computer manufacturers locating a manufacturing base in Scotland there has been an attraction for foreign companies keen to provide service for these multinationals. In 1995/96 the supply base output was worth £1.

Thus, the title of this conference proceedings volume - Flexible Automation - reflects an added emphasis to the usual industrial automation. As with general automation that has impacted every component of the manufacturing office and plant, the identity of flexible automation can possess various forms and functions. The papers in this volume have been grouped into two main categories. One category deals with implementation of so-called "intelligent manufacturing". This means use of algorithmic methods and artificial intelligence approaches to various problems encountered in practical factory automation tasks. The placement of papers into five chapters of this part cannot be very precise, due to multidisciplinary nature and constant rapid change of the field. The categories are arranged starting from problems of enhancement of current factory settings, and followed by the papers addressing more specific issues of production planning, process technology and product engineering. The fifth chapter contains papers on the very important aspects of factory automation - problems of design, simulation, operation and monitoring of manufacturing cells.
