But times are hard for her family and what she gets instead is her Mama's blue dress cut and resewn to fit her. Disappointed, she lays down under the pinata Papa has hung for her party and begins to dream that it is filled with new dresses. She also dreams that the pinata holds eggs for Mama to cook, rain for Papa's thirsty corn, and a strong horse for Grandmother to ride when she is tired. Thinking of her family, Manuela discovers that she has much to be thankful for. Kristyn Estes' poetic text and Claire Cotts' magical paintings make this a touching story full of hope and celebration.

Book Madeleine L Engle The Polly O Keefe Quartet LOA 310

Download or read book Madeleine L Engle The Polly O Keefe Quartet LOA 310 written by Madeleine L'Engle and published by Library of America. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 1050 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wrinkle in Time was only the beginning: here, together for the first time in a deluxe Library of America edition, are the thrilling adventures of Meg Murray's daughter Polly. Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time is one of the most beloved and influential novels for young readers ever written, a thrilling tale in which fourteen-year-old Meg Murry and her schoolmate Calvin O'Keefe use a tesseract to travel across space and time to save Meg's scientist father from dire forces threatening the universe. But A Wrinkle in Time was only the beginning of the adventure. Now, for the first time, L'Engle's iconic classic and all seven of its sequels--the complete Kairos ("cosmic time") novels--are collected in a deluxe two-volume Library of America edition, together with never-seen-before deleted passages and hard-to-find essays in which L'Engle reflects on her work. This second volume gathers the final four Kairos novels, in which Meg and Calvin's daughter Polly takes center stage. In The Arm of the Starfish, Polly disappears, and Calvin's research assistant is implicated in her kidnapping. In Dragons in the Waters, Polly and her brother Charles are on a steamer bound for Venezuela when they help solve a murder connected to a stolen portrait of Simon Bolivar. Polly receives an education in different kinds of love in A House Like a Lotus. And in An Acceptable Time, Polly is lured through a tesseract by a friend who may be hoping to sacrifice Polly in order to save himself. A companion volume gathers the first four Kairos Novels, the Wrinkle in Time quartet, which also includes A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and Many Waters. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Book Gay Directors Gay Films

Download or read book Gay Directors Gay Films written by Emanuel Levy and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through intimate encounters with the life and work of five contemporary gay male directors, this book develops a framework for interpreting what it means to make a gay film or adopt a gay point of view. For most of the twentieth century, gay characters and gay themes were both underrepresented and misrepresented in mainstream cinema. Since the 1970s, however, a new generation of openly gay directors has turned the closet inside out, bringing a poignant immediacy to modern cinema and popular culture. Combining his experienced critique with in-depth interviews, Emanuel Levy draws a clear timeline of gay filmmaking over the past four decades and its particular influences and innovations. While recognizing the "queering" of American culture that resulted from these films, Levy also takes stock of the ensuing conservative backlash and its impact on cinematic art, a trend that continues alongside a growing acceptance of homosexuality. He compares the similarities and differences between the "North American" attitudes of Todd Haynes, Gus Van Sant, and John Waters and the "European" perspectives of Pedro Almodóvar and Terence Davies, developing a truly expansive approach to gay filmmaking and auteur cinema.

Book excerpt: Inspector Jefe Javier Falcón investigates a series of suspicious suicides in the “intricate [and] chilling” follow up to The Blind Man of Seville (Publishers Weekly). In an exclusive suburb of Seville, Spain, a wealthy couple is found dead in their home, the tragic conclusion to an apparent suicide pact. Lucia Vega has been suffocated in her own bed, while her husband, construction magnate Rafael Vega, has succumbed to poison, a bizarre note clutched in his hand. When Inspector Javier Falcón is called to investigate the scene, he senses something is not as it seems—a hunch that proves all too true. Within two days, two more dubious suicides occur, a fire rages through the hills above the city, and Falcón himself receives ominous threats from the Russian mafia. Embroiled in a conspiracy much larger than it originally appeared, Falcón must uncover the secrets that were buried with the dead, before the gruesome body count rises even higher. “Tangly, sprawly, garrulous, astute, here’s one more Wilson witchery that intertwines literature and art.” —Los Angeles Times “Wilson builds a many-layered portrait of survivors and perpetrators, each consumed by rage, guilt, or depression.” —The Boston Globe

Book Dreams and Realities

Download or read book Dreams and Realities written by Juana Manuela Gorriti and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-20 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most dramatic figures among Latin America's romantic writers and the distinguished woman writer of her century, Juana Manuela Gorriti brings passion and intrigue to the scene of writing. An exile from her native Argentina who sought refuge first in Bolivia and then in Peru, her lifetime of travel and displacement is echoed in her fictions. Her short stories tell of homelessness and nomadic yearnings, taking the reader from the Peruvian highlands, where Spanish colonizers plot to rob the treasures of the Incas, to the Argentine capital city plagued by sinister political intentions. Her later fictions move from Chile to scenes of the California Gold Rush. Covering the wide landscape of the Americas, Gorriti tracks the spirit of nineteenth-century adventurers and dandies, nation builders and soldiers who participate in the conflicts of settlement in a new and lawless land. Women are the protagonists here, mediating episodes of civil strife as they voice their despair about the treachery of fortune seekers in Latin America in the years following Independence from Spain. Dreams and Realities offers a sampling of Gorriti's stories, showing the range of her commitment to political fiction drawn in the romantic style. Originally published in four volumes under the titles Suenos y realidades and Panoramas de la vida, her works deal with the tyranny of the Rosas regime, the mediating role of women, and the clash of European and indigenous cultures. Notwithstanding her personal political leanings, Gorriti's stories and fictions provide a generous dose of swashbuckling adventure and romance. Translated into English for the first time by Sergio Waisman and with an Introduction, Chronology, and Critical Notes by Francine Masiello, the book gives a woman's view of the world of political intrigue and civil unrest that marks Latin America's turbulent nineteenth century.
