Book Distribution and Identification of Woody Plants of Oklahoma in the Winter Condition

Download or read book Distribution and Identification of Woody Plants of Oklahoma in the Winter Condition written by Paul Buck and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Last paragraph of Introduction: The purpose of this effort, Oklahoma Winter Botany, is to provide a mechanism for the identification of the woody flora of the state and encompasses all species with above ground woody tissue during the winter, including vines, shrubs and trees. Not infrequently smaller shrubs are semi-woody, dying back to near soil level yearly. Although these forms have been included, many may be keyed only to the genus level recognizing the difficulty of identification to the species. A few naturalized species have been included but only where they are locally cultivated and of significant interest (Ginkgo biloba L.) or have demonstrated the ability to become established, even temporarily, with the native flora (Ailanthus altissima (Miller) Swingle). The scientific and common names of the trees follow Little's Checklist of United States Trees, Forest Service, Agricultural Handbook No. 541, 1979. Waterfall's Keys to the Flora of Oklahoma (1979( has been used as the authority for the vines and shrubs unless otherwise indicated. No effort has been made to provide identification below species level and all varietal, formal, and hybrid names have been arbitrarly omitted.--Paul Buck--University of Tulsa--December 1983.

Book Field Guide for the Identification of Invasive Plants in Southern Forests

Download or read book Field Guide for the Identification of Invasive Plants in Southern Forests written by James H. Miller and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasions of non-native plants into forests of the Southern United States continue to go unchecked and only partially un-monitored. These infestations increasingly erode forest productivity, hindering forest use and management activities, and degrading diversity and wildlife habitat. Often called non-native, exotic, non-indigenous, alien, or noxious weeds, they occur as trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, ferns, and forbs. This guide provides information on accurate identification of the 56 non-native plants and groups that are currently invading the forests of the 13 Southern States. In additin, it lists other non-native plants of growing concern. Illustrations. This is a print on demand edition of an important, hard-to-find publication.
