Book Manual of the Vine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of the Vine Classic Reprint written by C. W. Grant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Vine At about the same time, a small grape of surpassing beauty and most excellent flavor, attracted the attention of Mr. A. Thomson of Delaware, Ohio, and was exhibited by him at the County Fairs, under the name of the Heath Grape; a few years later, after becoming fully assured of its great value, he introduced it to the public under the name of Delaware. But its great excellence proved a hindrance to its dissemination, for it was claimed that no grape of such high excellence could be of American origin. Mr. Thomson had become intimately acquainted with the characteristics of foreign vines, from those growing in his own house as well as from extensive observation, and never doubted as to the native origin of the Delaware, but was too modest to make strenuous efforts to vindicate his Opinions, although he never failed positively to assert his convictions. In consequence of various hindrances and discouragements, he did not vigorously undertake its propagation, and therefore it had little opportunity to make itself generally known as the American grape, but in the mean while, its character for beauty and excellence has not deteriorated, and in size of bunch and berry, it has greatly increased as Opportunity for development has been afforded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wine Press and the Cellar: A Manual for the Wine-Maker and the Cellar-Man The figures for 1882, as published, are larger than those for 1881, but the figures furnished by Mr. Stone, the statistician of the Merchants Exchange, give wine brandy, from which I am led to believe that those for 1881 are too large. The total production of wine for 1878 has been stated to be from to gallons, for 1879, for 1880, to gallons. Notwithstanding the increased acreage of our vineyards, the product in 1881 fell off one or two million gallons, and in the second annual report of the State Viti cultural Commission, just published, the loss is estimated at one third of the cr0p, making the product gallons, or a little less. That of 1882 is about gallons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wine-Drinker's Manual The object of the following pages is to exhibit a sketchy outline of the most celebrated vineyards, and the several processes of wine-making in different countries: in short, to represent the general economy of one of the most interesting branches of human invention. The subject was of no very facile complexion; but one from which the Author would have shrunk with due sense of his incompetence to treat, had he not been induced to the task, by the superabundance of materials, which, much reading and laborious research enabled him to render available. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise Origin, Nature, and Varieties Wine: A Complete Manual of Viticulture and nology In presenting this treatise to the public, the Authors have hardly any statement to make which is not contained or implied in the work itself. Nevertheless, as the title may fail in conveying fully the scope and intensity of their labours, they beg leave to supplement it by a short preliminary statement of the principles by which they have been guided. In the first place, the Authors determined to produce a strictly scientific work, based as far as possible upon their personal observations. Such have therefore been made in the vineyards, cellars, and repositories of many countries, in the respective chemical laboratories of the Authors, in public and private gardens, in open nature, and in mines underground. Wherever possible, they availed themselves of the writings of previous authors for the purpose of guiding or supplementing their observations, and with that object they have consulted and used nearly two hundred out of the six hundred works which compose the world's cenological literature. The Authors next endeavoured to give due proportions to each of the elements of their treatise, so as to make it useful to the greatest possible number of readers. Book Manual of American Grape Growing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of American Grape Growing Classic Reprint written by U. P. Hedrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of American Grape-Growing Seventy-nine books on grapes enrich the pomology of North America, not counting numerous state and national publications. Pomological writers in America have been partial to the grape, for other fruits do not fare nearly so well. Twenty - two books are devoted to the strawberry, fourteen to the apple, to the peach nine, cranberry eight, plum five, pear nine, quince two, logan'berry one, while the cherry, raspberry, and blackberry are not once separated from other fruits in special books. Thus, though a comparative newcomer among the fruits of the country, the grape has been singled out for a treatise more times than all other fruits of temperate climates combined seventy-nine books on the grape, seventy on all other fruits. This statement of partiality does not lead to an apology for a new book on the grape. There is urgent need for a new book. But three of the seventy-nine treatises on this fruit are con temporary, and all but one, a handbook on training, are records from vanished minds. Methods change so rapidly and varieties multiply so fast, that to keep pace there must be new books on fruits every few years. Besides, the types of grapes are so diverse, and different soils, climates, and treatments produce such widely dissimilar results, that many books are required to do justice to this fruit the vineyard should be seen through many eyes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Origin, Nature, and Varieties of Wine: Being a Complete Manual of Viticulture and OEnology It is thus not difficult to see in what direction the taste of the educated or informed part of the people will in the future be developed. The days of the heavily-brandied wines are numbered, since it is proved that the wines of Xeres and Oporto can be brought into a merchantable condition with out extraneous spirit. As the habits of the people get softened, so they decrease both the quantity and strength of the alcoholic liquids which they consume, and insist upon increasing quality and differentiation of their beverages. Book Grape Culture and Wine Making in California

Download or read book Grape Culture and Wine Making in California written by George Husmann and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grape Culture and Wine-Making in California: A Practical Manual for the Grape Grower and Wine Maker A book, specially devoted to "Grape Culture and Wine Making in California," would seem to need no apology for its appearance, however much the author may do so for undertaking the task. California seems to him, at least, as "the chosen land of the Lord," the great Vineland; and the industry, now only in its first stages of development, destined to overshadow all others. It has already assumed dimensions, within the short period of its existence, hardly forty years, that our European brethren can not believe it, and a smile of incredulity comes to their lips when we speak of vineyards of several thousand acres, with a product of millions of gallons per annum. But, while fully cognizant of the importance of these large enterprises, it is not for their owners that this little volume is written specially. The millionaire who is able to plant and maintain a vineyard of several thousand acres, can and should provide the best and most scientific skill to manage his vineyard and his cellars; it will be the wisest and most economical course for him, he can afford to pay high salaries, and the most costly wineries, provided they are also practical, would be a good investment for him. We have thousands, perhaps the large majority of our wine growers, however, who are comparatively poor men, many of whom have to plant their vineyards, nay, even clear the land for them with their own hands, make their first wine in a wooden shanty with a rough lever press, and work their way up by slow degrees to that competence which they hope to gain by the sweat of their brow.
