Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Hebrew Syntax By publishing a Dutch Manual of Hebrew Syntax I believe I am corresponding with the wish of many of my countrymen. At least I have heard several com plaints of the want of such a book. I had moreover in my Manual of Hebrew Grammar (edition Joachims thal, Amsterdam 1888) promised to undertake the com posing of a Syntax. As regards the plan I have adopted in my Manual of Syntax I should like to draw attention to the fol lowing points. I need scarcely remark that I have consulted and utilised existing works bearing on the subject. Yet in the treatment of certain chapters I have thought it necessary to work independently for reasons which on comparison would be obvious. Book excerpt: This work on Hebrew Syntax is designed as a practical quick-reference manual for students moving from the study of elementary Hebrew grammar to that of Hebrew syntax and exegesis. This manual provides an easily accessible list of syntactical options for verbs, participles, nouns, and clauses. Each syntactical option is carefully illustrated. In addition, three helpful supplements are provided to assist those engaged in the task of exegesis. The first covers the most commonly encountered figures of speech. The second provides a complete list of signs and symbols appearing in the text-critical apparatus of the Hebrew Bible. The third provides a comprehensive list of Latin words and abbreviations appearing in the text-critical apparatus. With this manual in hand, the student has the basic tools in hand necessary for understanding Hebrew syntax and doing serious exegesis in the Hebrew Bible. The author holds a PhD in Hebrew studies from the Univ of Texas at Austin and has taught Hebrew language and exegetical courses for nearly forty years. He is also the author of the in-depth commentary on the Book of Daniel for the Evangelical Exegetical Commentary series.

Book A Guide to Biblical Hebrew Syntax

Download or read book A Guide to Biblical Hebrew Syntax written by Bill T. Arnold and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guide to Biblical Hebrew Syntax introduces and abridges the syntactical features of the original language of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. An intermediate-level reference grammar for Biblical Hebrew, it assumes an understanding of elementary phonology and morphology, and it defines and illustrates the fundamental syntactical features of Biblical Hebrew that most intermediate-level readers struggle to master. The volume divides Biblical Hebrew syntax and morphology into four parts. The first three cover the individual words (nouns, verbs, and particles) with the goal of helping the reader move from morphological and syntactical observations to meaning and significance. The fourth section moves beyond phrase-level phenomena and considers the larger relationships of clauses and sentences. Since publication of the first edition, research on Biblical Hebrew syntax has substantially evolved. This new edition incorporates these developments through detailed descriptions of grammatical phenomena from a linguistics approach. It retains the labels and terminology used in the first edition to maintain continuity with the majority of entry-level and more advanced grammars.

Book A Guide to Biblical Hebrew Syntax

Download or read book A Guide to Biblical Hebrew Syntax written by Bill T. Arnold and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduces and abridges the syntactical features of the original language of the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. Scholars have made significant progress in recent decades in understanding Biblical Hebrew syntax. Yet intermediate readers seldom have access to this progress due to the technical jargon and sometimes-obscure locations of the scholarly publications. This Guide is an intermediate-level reference grammar for Biblical Hebrew. As such, it assumes an understanding of elementary phonology and morphology, and defines and illustrates the fundamental syntactical features of Biblical Hebrew that most intermediate-level readers struggle to master. The volume divides Biblical Hebrew syntax, and to a lesser extent morphology, into four parts. The first three cover the individual words (nouns, verbs, and particles) with the goal of helping the reader move from morphological and syntactical observations to meaning and significance. The fourth section moves beyond phase-level phenomena and considers the larger relationships of clauses and sentences.
