(Mat.: xvil, 2.) Prayed particularly for Peter, that his faith should not fail. (Luke: xxii, 32.) d. Christ committed the care of his whole church to Peter, saying, "Feed my sheep. Feed my lambs." (John: xxi, 15.) To this (admitting that Peter was the most, forward and fluent of the twelve, and generally their spokesman) we reply: e. That Christ expressly forbade any gradation of rank among the twelve. "One is your master, even Christ, and all ye are brethren." (Mat.: 23-8.) / The twelve knew nothing of any primacy in Peter. The dispute, who should be greatest, arose after the alleged appointment of Peter as their prince. (Mat.: xvi, 18.) g. Paul declared that he was fully equal to Peter--"in nothing behind the very chiefest apostles," (2 Cor.: Xii, 11, ) and rebuked him to the face. (Gal.: II, 11.) h. Peter had no idea of his own supremacy, nor ever claimed any. i. Christ's words to Peter, " Feed my sheep," etc., instead of being his commission to rule over the whole church, were merely an assurance that he was not put out of the ministry for his sin, but might continue, being penitent, to exercise the office of a pastor. k. Christ's Church was not to be built upon Peter, but upon the truth, which Peter had confessed, viz., the divine mission of Jesus as Messiah (f-i rau-nj r?j-irpa. Mat: xvi, 18.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Church Polity If an apology is to be made for the appearance of these Lectures in the form of a book, it is best that this apology should express frankly the motives for such appearance which lie in the authors mind. It seemed to him in some sense due to the Lectureship which he has filled for three years, that it should add something to the general literature of its theme. Lectures written on paper, whatever they may accomplish as lectures, perish with the using; but the printed volume, whether it have many readers or few, at least for a time remains. Moreover, the reading done in preparation for this writing has convinced the author that his treatment of the subject has some small claim to a certain originality and freshness of form. This impression has been confirmed by the testimony of a few friends, among whom, however, may be counted one who was not long since a master of the whole subject here treated in such a fragmentary way. That there is now great need of candid and reasonable discussion of all those principles which enter into the constitution and government of Christian churches, few will doubt. It is certain that such need is manifested among those leaders and churches which bear the Congregational name; nor is this need confined to them alone. It is contended that during these thirty years, and therefore during the lifetime of the Apostle John, a great change was made in the organisation of the apostolic churches, and that at the beginning of the second century the distinction between "bishops" and "presbyters" was widely and firmly established. The argument may be stated briefly in the following form: --'As late as 4A.D. 70 there is no sign of any distinction between a bishop and a 'presbyter; but soon after A.d. 100 it is clear that supreme authority * was attributed to the bishop. What is the history of this remark4 able change? The Apostle John was alive till nearly the close of the 'century, and the earliest indications of the supremacy of the bishop are in 'Asia Minor, where John's influence was most powerful. The distinction * between bishop and presbyter is strongly asserted in the epistles ot * Ignatius, which belong to the early part of the second century. May it not be inferred that this change in the organisation of Christian 'churches had John's sanction, and that the simpler polity which is fflns'trated in the New Testament was not intended to be permanent ?' * That the authority of the bishop had this early origin, that it was fully established some time before the end of the first century, and therefore f during the life of the Apostle John, does not rest on the unsupported 'authority oflgnatius; it is confirmed by other early' ecclesiastical writers.' * There are two questions to be investigated: (I.) What evidence exists in support of the position that early in the second century the distinction between " bishops " and "presbyters " was widely and firmly...
