Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Banking in Canada Efforts to introduce the practice of banking into the British North American provinces were put forth as early as 1792. The "Canada Banking Company," then organized by certain English firms and Montreal merchants, was not destined long to survive its origin, although one at least of its 5-shilling notes which has been preserved (No. 6803) is proof that it exercised the function of issue. It seems to have left little trace, either in men's memories or in the records of the time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Manual of Canadian Banking

Download or read book Manual of Canadian Banking written by Homer Mark Philip Eckardt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Canadian Banking One of the strong points of the branch system o! banking is that it brings all the offices operating under it, even the most remote and the smallest of them, into subjection to carefully devised codes of rules, ensuring reasonable uniformity of practice. The system also ensures expert and skilful guidance for the banking offices of every district, and the employment everywhere of the most modern and effective safeguards against fraud or dishonesty. This Manual essays to outline the methods and practices obtaining in Canada. Judging by the communications received from time to time, the subject has interest not only for Canadians but also for citizens of the United Kingdom and of the United States. In both of these countries the Canadian banks gained considerable prestige because of the creditable manner in which they surmounted the crisis of 1907- It is hoped that the detailed description of the working of the various parts of the Canadian machinery will permit students of our banking outside Canada to form a better and clearer notion of its strength and suitability. The Author also hopes that the Manual will be useful to members of Parliament and business men who wish to join in the periodical discussions of banking matters, through providing for them a means of becoming better acquainted with the interior economy of the banking business, and enabling them to handle the subject with more satisfaction to themselves and with more benefit to the Dominion. A word to that important class-the customers. Doubtless most of them-depositors, borrowers, purchasers of drafts, payees of cheques-have been confronted more or less frequently, in transacting their banking business, with rules and regulations not exactly understood, and perhaps causing irritation or displeasure. The book endeavours to explain just why these rules are put into force, and why they are necessary. And finally, the Author hopes that what he has written will help his fellow bank-men to climb the ladder, help them to give good service to their respective institutions in all the positions they fill, and to strengthen and extend the public good-will towards the banks; he hopes that it will be of use also to the executives, through spreading among the banking staffs a better knowledge of what the head offices want, and of the conduct and policy calculated to forward the best interests of the employing banks. Book Banking Principles and Practice Vol 16 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Banking Principles and Practice Vol 16 Classic Reprint written by Edward Lloyd Stewart Patterson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Banking Principles and Practice, Vol. 16 It would be impossible within the narrow confines of one volume to deal exhaustively with so extensive a subject as that of Canadian banking practice, but it is hoped that the parts of this subject dealt with herein will be found to be treated with due regard to their relative importance, and that no really essential information has been overlooked. As far as possible, all matters coming within the scope of the Bills of Exchange Act have been purposely omitted, because an intimate knowledge of the act itself is essential to every business man and banker. Altho Canadian banks may differ in bookkeep ing and methods, the general principles and aims of their systems are the same, and the reader should have no difficulty in understanding the forms and methods explained in the d104, and in interpreting them by his own experience. Too specific explanations have been avoided as far as possible, lest the principles involved should be buried under a mass of detail. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Historical Sketch of Canadian Banking and Currency, the Laws Relating Thereto Since Confederation, and a Comparison With British and American Systems Modern systems of banking have much in common, and this isspecially true of what may be termed English systems, in cluding under this designation those prevailing in the United States and British Colonies, as well as those in Great Britain and Ireland. In discussing, then Canadian banking and cur rency, we cannot well avoid referring frequently to British and American systems, and it is desirable that these references should take the form not only of explanation, but of comparison. In fact, our Canadian banking system, like our Canadian political constitution, is a compound of British and American elements, with a few native ingredients intermingled, and rendered necessary by our peculiar circumstances.
