These books deal with principles and methods and somewhat with material, so that the student or the teacher need be at no loss for suggestions. But the subject is so new and nature so extensive and the suggestions as to use of material often so general that the books seem to differ confusingly, and the honest seeker for help often becomes more mystified the more he reads. In fact, nature study is still in the period of suggestion, a period which may be trying to the experienced teacher, but which is a necessary antecedent to the period of experiment. The time has come for extensive experiment by trained teachers, putting to rigorous test the suggestions that seem hopeful. Teachers will always have the last word. It is not with the hope that this confusion of suggestions will be cleared up that these pages are written. Their purpose is simply to state the situation in such a way that the teacher may become more independent in his work and thought and thereby better able to eliminate confusion from his own particular problem. We shall never reach general agreement in this matter until many good teachers have conducted careful experiments and their results have been sifted. Even when this is done, teachers themselves are such variable factors that no hard-and-fast schemes of nature study can be or ought to be constructed, but rather an approved body of principles, the details of whose application must be left to the individual teacher. They are to cooperate with the great powers of nature and to be able, in many instances, to control these powers. They instinctively long to become acquainted with the materials they are to work upon, and the powers they are to work with. An agricultural education should, therefore, be commenced in childhood. Children are always interested in animals and other natural objects. There is scarcely a fact exhibited in nature which does not, at once, interest their curiosity and appeal to their imagination. They should, therefore, learn about the earth, the different kinds of soil, the names of the different kinds of rocks and their uses. Tell children that, in the soil, the roots of the grasses dissolve the stones, and carry particles of them up and leave them, infinitely minute but infinitely numerous, in the stem and leaves, and that these particles make the grass strong enough to stand up, and they will be interested in the information. Agriculture, as a school subject, is new, and no guiding standards have yet been generally recognized which limit the method or scope of such a text. A careful review of the many texts that have been published during the last ten years shows a wide range of opinion as to the function of such texts. Some are mere handbooks, dealing with the practical work of agriculture; others are only a series of short chapters on botany, chemistry, physics, zoology, meteorology, etc., without references to applications. Our own ideas are that the primary object of a text on agriculture, intended for the common schools, is to satisfy the natural interest of all children about the whys of common farm conditions. This is the first step in developing an intelligent theory which will guide practice. While the idea of teaching agriculture is very old, it is only i recent years that it has come to be a large factor in the system of general education. A word of introduction, therefore, may not be out of place. A number of agricultural colleges and special schools for agricultural instruction were established between 1840 and 1860. A majority of the children who attend the village and rural schools will remain in the country, and it is right and proper that they should be educated in the things with which they will have to deal ever}' day of their lives. The success of the work will depend very largely upon the teacher. Pupils are naturally interested in those things with which they are constantly in contact, and need only the encouragement of the teacher to direct their enthusiasm. In this manual a few exercises are given to illustrate some of the fundamental principles of plant growth, but the central idea throughout is the practical application of these principles to crop production and improvement. Some of the exercises are original, but many of them have been adapted from the publications of the United States Department of Agriculture and from the bulletins of the Extension Department of the Ohio State University.
