The Borough of Islington in 1893, was the first public health authority in London to appoint a woman sanitary inspector with full legal status. Prior to this, the city of Nottingham in 1892 had appointed a woman workshop inspector: and Kensington also in 1893 appointed two women sanitary inspectors to inspect laundries only at first and later workshops Where women were employed. Still earlier, in 1870, the City Council of Glasgow appointed four female visitors (afterwards known as assistant sanitary inspectors), to advise the inhabitants Of tenement houses how to keep their dwellings clean and sanitary. They had the same f entry as the men sanitary inspectors and were enab to deal with some nuisances directly.
