El libro, que complementa el publicado referente al Mantenimiento y mejora de elementos vegetales, expone las intervenciones y trabajos de limpieza, conservación, reparación y renovación que puedan ser necesarias a lo largo del año en los elementos y componentes no vegetales del jardín, parque o espacio verde tanto en las infraestructuras establecidas, como en las instalaciones de todo tipo, equipamientos y mobiliario que nos podemos encontrar en cada caso y que pueden alcanzar un alto y muy complejo nivel tecnológico. A estos contenidos, se añaden con objeto de no perder de vista los aspectos económicos, otros capítulos referentes a la obtención inicial de información y datos en el correspondiente proyecto; a la valoración económica y cálculo de presupuestos para todas estas intervenciones y a la normativa legal vigente para estas actividades en cuanto a la prevención de riesgos laborales y a la protección medioambiental. Todos los contenidos se plantean de forma esencialmente práctica y aplicada, con abundantes fotografías representativas de lo expuesto en el texto, con el deseo y la intención de que la formación conseguida en esta Unidad sea una garantía para la incorporación inmediata de su poseedor al mercado de trabajo del sector. Book excerpt: On October 14-19, 1990, the 6th International Conference on the Conservation of Earthen Architecture was held in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Sponsored by the GCI, the Museum of New Mexico State Monuments, ICCROM, CRATerre-EAG, and the National Park Service, under the aegis of US/ICOMOS, the event was organized to promote the exchange of ideas, techniques, and research findings on the conservation of earthen architecture. Presentations at the conference covered a diversity of subjects, including the historic traditions of earthen architecture, conservation and restoration, site preservation, studies in consolidation and seismic mitigation, and examinations of moisture problems, clay chemistry, and microstructures. In discussions that focused on the future, the application of modern technologies and materials to site conservation was urged, as was using scientific knowledge of existing structures in the creation of new, low-cost, earthen architecture housing.

Book excerpt: When WILHELM RUHLAND developed his plan for an Encyclopedia of Plant Physiol ogy more than three decades ago, biology could still be conveniently subdivided into classical areas. Even within plant physiology, subdivisions were not too difficult to make, and general principles could be covered sufficiently in the two introductory volumes of the Encyclopedia on the physical and chemical basis of cell biology. But the situation changed rapidly even during the 12-year publication period of the Encyclopedia (1955-1967). The new molecular direction of genetics and structural research on biopolymers had an integrating effect on all other biological fields, including plant physiology, and it became increasingly difficult to keep previously distinct areas separated. RUHLAND'S overall plan included 18 volumes and about 22,000 pages. It covered the entire field of plant physiology, in most cases from the very beginning. But, as each volume appeared, it was clear that its content would soon be outdated.

Biodiversity is spread unequally over the world: in fact, the main share of biological resources worldwide is harboured predominantly by the so-called developing countries in the tropics and sub tropics. Therefore, Biodiversity - A Challenge for Development Research and Policy was chosen as the title for an international conference which was held in Bonn in 1997 as one of the first major events organized by the then newly established North-South Centre for Development Research (ZEF) at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitat Bonn (Germany). Since the ZEF, founded by the Senate of the University of Bonn in 1995, has played a central role in turning Bonn into a centre for international cooperation and North-South dialogue. The Centre is a product of the Bonn Berlin agreement of July 1994 which was adopted to offset the effects caused by the Parliament and much of the Government moving to Berlin. It fits in well with the double strategy to strengthen Bonn's position as an interna tional science arena and as an eminent place for development policy and the national and supranational agencies dealing with this issue.
