Download or read book Weaning the pig written by J.R. Pluske and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Weaning the Pig: Concepts and Consequences' is a new book that addresses the major issues surrounding the weaning process, both for piglets and the breeding herd, in modern-day pig production. The post-weaned pig presents many challenges to the manager, stockperson and nutritionist, and as such is a critical phase in the overall production system. Numerous challenges are also faced by the sow, which is required to be rebred as soon as possible after weaning. This book draws together summaries of research dealing with both piglets and the sow, and is a unique book in this regard. Accordingly, the material presented covers in detail the following areas associated with the weaning process: growth of the weaned pig, nutritional management in preparation for weaning, behavioural changes and adaptations around weaning, voluntary feed intake, digestive physiology, modulation of small intestinal integrity, the intestinal microflora and diarrhoeal diseases after weaning, intestinal immunity, nutritional requirements and intestinal requirements of the weaned pig, environmental and housing issues after weaning, saving and rearing supernumery and underprivileged piglets, and productivity and longevity of the weaned sow. The chapters have been written by acknowledged experts from around the world. The book is an ideal reference for all professions associated with the pig industry, and is invaluable as a text for students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Book Gaining the edge in pork and poultry production

Download or read book Gaining the edge in pork and poultry production written by J. Taylor-Pickard and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, pork and poultry production has become an extremely competitive industry. There is now more pork consumed in the world than any other meat, yet there is still intense competition for the industry to attract and retain consumers. Consumers continue to demand safe, high quality pork and poultry products at competitive prices compared to other high protein food alternatives. To ensure sustainability of both the pig and poultry industries, producers must endeavour to seek new technologies to improve production efficiency whilst lowering the cost of production and producing a quality product. This edited collection of articles is taken from a series of seminars that brought together some of the world’s leading authorities in the field of pig and poultry nutrition and production. The fundamental theme is to re-examine the current trends in productivity within the pig and poultry industries, and to identify nutritional and managerial means to improve competitiveness as well as the quality of the end product. The importance of animal health together with novel strategies for disease control and ways to minimise the environmental impact of pig and poultry production are covered. ‘Gaining the edge in pork and poultry production’ is aimed at nutritionists and animal producers as well as students and researchers studying animal and applied biological sciences.

Book Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals

Download or read book Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals written by Primary Industries Standing Committee and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the Code is intended as a guide for all people responsible for the welfare of pigs under both intensive, deep litter and outdoor systems. Good welfare of farmed pigs will ensure that pigs cope well in their environment and that factors such as growth, reproductive performance, disease levels, injuries and death rates are within industry standards. The Code recognizes that the basic requirement for the welfare of pigs is a husbandry system, managed by trained and skilled stock-people to ensure that basic needs of pigs are met: * Readily accessible appropriate and sufficient food and water * Adequate shelter to protect from climatic extremes * Opportunity to display appropriate patterns of behaviour * Physical handling in a manner which minimizes the likelihood of unreasonable or unnecessary pain or distress * Protection from, and/or rapid diagnosis and correct treatment of injury or disease * Freedom for necessary movement including to stand, stretch and lie down * Visual and social contact with other pigs This Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals has been prepared by the Animal Welfare Working Group (AWWG) for the Primary Industries Ministerial Council (PIMC). The AWWG is made up of representatives from CSIRO, Animal Health Australia, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australia, and from each of the State Departments responsible for agriculture. Extensive consultation has taken place with industry and animal welfare organisations in the development of the Code. This new edition supercedes the Second Edition, SCARM Report 66

Book Phytogenics in Animal Nutrition

Download or read book Phytogenics in Animal Nutrition written by Tobias Steiner and published by Nottingham University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on gut health in animals, his accessible study provides an overview of the potential benefits of phytogenic substances and plant-based feed additives to animal nutrition. This up-to-date and well-researched exploration focuses on the latest scientific knowledge regarding these additives and their potential use as flavoring agents and growth promoters in different animals worldwide, from pigs and poultry to ruminant mammals and aquatic species. It also highlights results from in vitro experiments as well as in vivo trials and shows how these tests have practical implication of phytogenic feeding concepts. Recognizing that the mechanisms in these additives are versatile and still need additional elucidation and scientific proof, this examination intends to help scientists and the feed industry further develop the group of feed additives.

Book Nutrient Management of Food Animals to Enhance and Protect the Environment

Download or read book Nutrient Management of Food Animals to Enhance and Protect the Environment written by E.T. Kornegay and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-05-22 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrient management is an important aspect of feeding livestock and poultry. Today, there is more attention directed toward this issue in animal production than ever before. The heightened awareness of the environmental impacts associated with animal production has caused animal nutritionists to refocus their thoughts, practices, and expectations regarding how nutrients are supplied to animals. In addition, the increase in the size and intensity of modern production units demands new technologies for enhancing nutrient utilization and for reducing the amount of nutrients excreted. Covering these issues and more, Nutrient Management of Food Animals to Enhance and Protect the Environment is a reference tool for agricultural industry leaders, private practitioners, governmental agencies, and researchers.
