Book Innovation Regimes and Knowledge Dynamics

Download or read book Innovation Regimes and Knowledge Dynamics written by P.A. Chibvuma and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research focuses on innovations, regulatory regimes, knowledge dynamics and the role of the context among four mango farmer groups in Mbeere District, Eastern Province in Kenya. It uses the Innovation systems approach, strategic niche management and the contextualized nature of knowledge and knowledge dynamics as the theoretical framework. The research aimed at understanding the underlying mechanisms and processes leading to the outcomes evidenced in the JOLISAA mango case project. The research was conducted at a micro level inorder to get an insight on the interaction of actors and their knowledges as explained by the innovation systems and network approach. The research took a case study approach as it focused on four heterogenous mango farmer groups spread across Mbeere District. Inorder to get an understanding on the order of events leading to the unfolding of the case, the critical event analysis was used. Data was collected through in depth interviews with stakeholders, focus group discussions, participant observations as well as through secondary data analysis. Mango is a fruit of economic importance in Kenya as it ranks third after bananas and pineapples on the export returns. There are 32 different mango varieties in Kenya which are classified under two broad categories of indigenous and exotic varieties. Farmers in the study group farm both varieties. However, three of the farmer groups are more inclined towards exotic mango varieties due to their market advantages. The types of varieties to grow were also influenced by the role of organisations such as NGOs which ran mango promotion projects for the exotic varieties. This saw most of the farmers in the areas where the NGOs ran their projects getting more inclined to exotic varieties as they managed to get free certified seedlings. One of the four farmer groups did not have any stakeholder coming to them and so they grow almost entirely the indigenous mango varieties. Since the farmers produce mangoes, they need a market for their produce. The four farmer groups are engaged in mango value addition. The farmers mainly got into mango value addition as a way of addressing the market challenges faced for raw mangoes. Still with mango value addition, the farmers face challenges. The four mango farming groups undergo four similar stages which are: group registration, mango production, mango processing and certification. At each of these stages which the groups undergo, the interplay of knowledge, regulatory regimes, contexts, role of stakeholders could be clearly visualized. Farmers in other JOLISAA innovation cases in Kenya and in other projects elsewhere in the world seemed to undergo the same pattern and face similar challenges. In conclusion after a close analysis of the case, it emerged that the farmers’ groups who had the greatest number of stakeholders cushioning and supporting them progressed further in the innovation chain and are almost achieving their objectives. External stakeholder availability and support was influenced by contextual factors such as electricity and road network which influences accessibility of the farmer groups to the stakeholders. Also as the farmers move along the commercialization chain, they are also moving out of the zones where their knowledge is sufficient into unknowledgeable zones and they tend to become more dependent on external knowledge and external stakeholders.

Book Post harvest losses in fruits and vegetables The Kenyan context

Download or read book Post harvest losses in fruits and vegetables The Kenyan context written by Ridolfi, Carlotta and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report collates and contextualizes available evidence on post-harvest losses (PHL) in horticultural crops in Kenya. We begin by outlining the extent of PHL in horticultural crops and its repercussions in the context of food security and poverty reduction. We then describe the growing importance of the horticulture sector in Kenya and its growth potential, especially in terms of exports. Following this discussion, we detail PHL for two important horticultural crops, mangoes and tomatoes, for which Kenya-specific evidence is available. We discuss ways to mitigate PHL from three angles: technological, economic or behavioral, and institutional. Documenting cost-effective technological interventions to mitigate PHL, we catalogue ways to tackle PHL at the individual farmer level. We then highlight behavioral bottlenecks to adoption of such technologies and the need to design interventions in ways that address these. Finally, we discuss structural and institutional changes that would need to accompany individual-level interventions to bring about significant reductions in PHL.

Book Transformative Food Value Chains for Local Development

Download or read book Transformative Food Value Chains for Local Development written by Silke Maria Stöber and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-26 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the capacity of food systems to undertake a transformation towards sustainability requires understanding how resources stream in and out of the systems. As complex socio-economic structures, food and agricultural value chains are important means for channeling resources, knowledge, and agency in and out of rural areas. Given their prominent role on the development agendas, there is mixed evidence as to what extent value chains and their actors can contribute to improving the livelihoods in poor rural and urban areas. In order to shape sustainable living places, transformative capacities and good governance are important mainstays. Transformative agri-food value chains are robust and often act as the sole transmission belt for returning capital, resources and identity back into vulnerable areas. Moreover, domestic or regional chains may provide urban consumers with fresh quality food that also contributes to regional identity.

Book Tree Based Production Systems for Africa s Drylands

Download or read book Tree Based Production Systems for Africa s Drylands written by Frank Place and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree-based production systems have enormous potential to reduce vulnerability and increase the resilience of households living in dryland regions of Sub-Saharan Africa. Trees are key providers of biomass, which is critical for many livelihood needs. Wood from trees is the leading source of energy in many dryland countries and is an important construction material. Foliage and pods from trees and shrubs are the most important source of feed for camels and goats, which are the dominant livestock species in the more arid parts of the drylands. Trees and shrubs offer enhanced sources of the organic matter needed to improve the structure and raise the fertility of soils used for agriculture. Many parts of trees provide different medicinal products for people. And fruits and vegetable foliage harvested from trees are important seasonal food sources for people living in drylands, and for sale. The benefi ts from trees take on added value when one considers that they are relatively impervious to many of the shocks that affect other production systems, especially livestock keeping and agriculture. Trees, with their deep rooting systems, maintain their standing value and offer some production even in drought years. They are therefore a good buffer against climatic risk and are a critical element in a diversifi cation strategy designed to maintain levels of consumption and income in good times and bad. In addition, their value can be tapped when it is most needed: wood from trees can be harvested throughout the year, and many annual tree products are harvested at times different from the times when annual crops are harvested. Tree-Based Production Systems for Africa’s Drylands identifi es some of the most promising investment opportunities at the level of tree-based systems, species (products), and well-defi ned management practices for accelerating rural economic growth in the drylands.

Book Fruit Fly Research and Development in Africa Towards a Sustainable Management Strategy to Improve Horticulture

Download or read book Fruit Fly Research and Development in Africa Towards a Sustainable Management Strategy to Improve Horticulture written by Sunday Ekesi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horticultural sector presents many opportunities for economic development and improving livelihood of growers but several factors constrain production and limit the potential for trade of fruits and vegetables. Tephritid fruit flies constitute a major constraint. They cause enormous losses through direct feeding damage and loss of market opportunities through imposition of quarantine restrictions by importing countries to prevent entry and their establishment. In Africa, several native (Ceratitis and Dacus spp) and exotic (Bactrocera and Zeugodacus spp.) species inflict considerable losses to horticulture causing losses ranging from 30-90%. Over the past 10 years of R&D, extensive information has been generated on bioecology and management of several native and exotic fruit flies in Africa. While several specific reviews have addressed various aspects of the biology, ecology and management of economically important tephritid fruit flies; coverage of African native species has been limited largely to Bactrocera oleae and Ceratitis capitata – which are not economically important species in many Africa countries. Indeed, no book exist that have explicitly addressed economically important African fruit flies and none of the various reviews, have specifically focused on the status of the bioecology, economic impact and management of exotic and native fruit flies – including several potentially invasive Dacus species attacking vegetables - in Africa. This book consolidates this status of knowledge and socio-economic impact of various intervention techniques that are currently being applied across Africa. The timing of the book is especially pertinent due to the changing fruit fly landscape in Africa – caused by arrivals of the highly destructive alien invasives (Bactrocera dorsalis, B. zonata, and B. latifrons) - and the priorities African countries have placed recently on export of fruits and vegetables to international markets. This is an important reference material for researchers, academics and students that are keen at improving horticulture and enhancing food and nutrition security in Africa and beyond.

This beautifully illustrated book takes us on a tour through the rich world of mangoes, which inspire fervent devotion across the world. In South Asia, mangoes boast a history steeped in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, even earning a mention in the Kama Sutra. Beyond myth, the authors show us that mangoes hold literary significance as a potent metaphor. While mango-flavored smoothies grace Western grocery shelves, the true essence of sweet, juicy mangoes or tangy, unripe varieties is a rarity: supermarket offerings often prioritize shelf-life over taste. This book offers an accessible introduction to the world of true mango aficionados and the thousand varieties they cherish.
