Book Multivariate Analyses of the Effects of Land Use Change on River Water Quality

Download or read book Multivariate Analyses of the Effects of Land Use Change on River Water Quality written by Imokhai Theophilus Tenebe and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various land use land cover (LULC) properties can be very informative about pollution signatures or fingerprints in rivers. In addition, determining the quantity of pollution contributed to river water quality by different LULC is important to determine best management practices (BMPs) to adopt for effective water resource management. This study was initiated to identify pollution sources over spatiotemporal scales by using a combination of univariate trend analyses, multivariate statistical methods, and a receptor model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the vast expanses of natural forests and the great populations of salmonids are harvested to support a rapidly expanding human population, the need to understand streams as ecological systems and to manage them effectively becomes increasingly urgent. The unfortunate legacy of such natural resource exploitation is well documented. For several decades the Pacific coastal ecoregion of North America has served as a natural laboratory for scientific and managerial advancements in stream ecology, and much has been learned about how to better integrate ecological processes and characteristics with a human-dominated environment. These in sightful but hard-learned ecological and social lessons are the subject of this book. Integrating land and rivers as interactive components of ecosystems and watersheds has provided the ecological sciences with impor tant theoretical foundations. Even though scientific disciplines have begun to integrate land-based processes with streams and rivers, the institutions and processes charged with managing these systems have not done so successfully. As a result, many of the watersheds of the Pacific coastal ecoregion no longer support natural settings for environmental processes or the valuable natural resources those processes create. An important role for scientists, educators, and decision makers is to make the integration between ecology and con sumptive uses more widely understood, as well as useful for effective management.

Book Water Allocation Law in New Zealand

Download or read book Water Allocation Law in New Zealand written by Jagdeepkaur Singh-Ladhar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-17 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses water allocation law and policy in New Zealand and offers a comparative analysis with Australia. In New Zealand, it is generally accepted that water allocation law has failed to be adequately addressed and New Zealand is now faced with the problem of over-allocation in many catchments. In comparison, Australia has extensive experience in reforming its water law and policy over the last 20 years. This book provides a comparative and critical analysis of the lessons that New Zealand can learn from the Australian experience and offers guidance for the improvement of water allocation outcomes in New Zealand. Starting with the background of water allocation law and policy in New Zealand, the book traces the evolution of legal policies, including the 1967 Water and Soil Conservation Act and the 1991 Resource Management Act, and examines the role they have played in current water allocation issues. The book situates these findings within global challenges, such as the impact of climate change, and the global scarcity of and increasing demand for freshwater resources. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars researching water law and policy, natural resource management and environmental law more broadly. It will also be of use to policy makers and professionals involved in developing and implementing water allocation laws and policies.
