Book The Political Economy of Trade Conflicts

Download or read book The Political Economy of Trade Conflicts written by Franz Waldenberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Ricardo's law of comparative advantage and his finding that free trade increases the wealth of all participating nations is one of the very few economic laws which is accepted by almost all economists. But economic reason and economic policy do not always follow the same path. This especially applies to trade policies. A substantial and growing part of trade between Japan, Europe and the US does not follow the principles of free trade, but is more accurately managed trade. The management of international trade, international trade negotiations, and the political dynamics of trade conflicts create a complex reality which follows its own laws without regard to economic policy prescriptions. This political-economic reality was the subject of the conference 'The Political Economy of Trade Conflicts' organizedjoindy by the German Institute for Japanese Studies and the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation together with the Institute of Modern Political Science and Economics of Waseda University in December 1993. We present the results of the conference in this reader. Three issues were of special importance: the US-Japanese conflict over the reduction of trade imbalances via quantitative import targets; the liberalization of trade in agricultural products, especially the opening of the Japanese rice market; and the trade tensions between the European Union, the US and Japan in high technology industries. The conference took place immediately before the conclusion of the Uruguay Round, and yet its subject continues to be of high political importance. In early 1994, the US-Japan conflict around quantitative import targets became more tense.

Book Harness the Rising Sun

Download or read book Harness the Rising Sun written by Aspen Strategy Group (U.S.) and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1993 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan is one of the United States' most important allies, yet relations between the two risk degenerating into serious conflicts over trade and other issues. This book outlines a new vision for U.S.-Japan relations that enables both countries to cooperate to achieve their mutual interests, while minimizing the conflicts that will inevitably arise between them. The new U.S.-Japan strategy must incorporate four critical elements. First, the strategy must be based upon a clear conception of U.S. national interest but be implemented in ways that capitalize on the mutual interests of both countries. Second, the strategy must integrate economic and security interests, which the United States decoupled during the cold war era. Third, a new U.S. strategy toward Japan must have an institutional expression, both domestically and internationally, if it is to be viable over the long term. Finally, the United States' Japan strategy must be part of a new global strategy for facing the challenges of the new world order. Contributors: Susan J. Pharr, Haruo Shimada, Clyde V. Prestowitz, Jr., C. Fred Bergsten, Paula Stern, Daniel I. Okimoto, and James H. Raphael. Co-published with the Aspen Strategy Group.

Download or read book Coping with U S Japanese Economic Conflicts written by I. M. Destler and published by Lexington, Mass. : Lexington Books. This book was released on 1982 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In november 1977, a U. S. trade official led an economic mission to Tokyo to urge changes in Japanese policies. The purpose was to avert what U. S. officials saw as a threatening crisis in bilateral economic relations. He was chosen, in part, for his modest rank and low-key personal style, because the United States's objective was to press issues strongly but privately. Instead, the mission provoked a media storm in Tokyo-so much of a storm that, when the emissary callled upon Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda, he was greeted with the words, "I am happy to meet the most famous man in Japan.

Book US Japan Trade Friction

Download or read book US Japan Trade Friction written by Thomas David Mason and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: US-Japan Trade Friction: Its Impact on Security Cooperation in the Pacific Basin is a collection of essays that explore the security implications of recent US-Japan trade tensions. Of particular concern is whether the security alliance that binds these two Pacific powers can weather the political storm surrounding the burgeoning US trade deficit. Noted scholars examine the dimensions and origins of the trade deficit, the domestic political tensions resulting from it, and the ways in which these conflicts strain a US-Japan security alliance that is already subject to disputes over burden-sharing issues.
