Book excerpt: Base-of-the-pyramid (BoP) research talks about market based solutions for the development of marginalized sections of informal market economies. However, absence of sound theoretical foundations is obstructing development of the discourse. Relatively mature, (sustainable) supply chain management ((S)SCM) literature has many analogous concepts to the BoP research. The integration of the two research streams can not only provide BoP with the much needed theoretical infrastructure, but can also open new research frontiers for the (S)SCM research. The extent dissertation is an effort to integrate the BoP and (S)SCM research. The results of the systematic literature review highlight the theoretical commonalities among the two research streams and led to development of certain frameworks based upon the results of contingency analysis. The empirical part of the dissertation tries to explore the (S)SCM practices significantly affecting the purchasing performance of indigenous BoP firms in a B2B context. Argumentation of the resource dependency theory is employed to get deeper insights into the empirical results of the study.

Book excerpt: Conducting business operations at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) have necessitated the need for multinational corporations (MNCs) to involve poor communities in production processes including management of critical supply chains. However, current research on the interface between supply chain management and BoP business operation is lacking. In analyzing three cases of BoP projects in the food industry this study addresses the question of how sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) applied to BoP projects can help MNCs to achieve their sustainability goals. Findings indicate that applying SSCM to BoP projects can complement economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability. In particular, the BoP projects analyzed show viable paths for integrating the social domain of sustainability with general SSCM theory and practice. From the perspective of international business research, the findings help to link sustainability activities to MNC operations at the BoP. Accordingly, further research is needed to advance integration of these two research streams.

Thomas Leppelt contributes to extant sustainability literature across the research disciplines of supply chain management, management and marketing by cross-functionally investigating the effects of sustainability on supplier-buyer relationships from both a supplier and a buyer perspective. The results of in total three academic articles provide valuable insights on how buyers as well as suppliers deal with sustainability upstream and downstream the supply chain. The results indicate that sustainability leaders, in contrast to sustainability followers, intensively invest in sustainable supplier relationship management practices. Moreover, a became evident that the effective marketing of sustainability-related capabilities enhances a supplier’s reputation and can render comparative advantages, if it sends consistent positive signals to the market and if it integrates purchasing and marketing in the context of sustainability.
