Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book excerpt: Urbanization is associated with a relatively consistent suite of changes that impact stream ecosystems, known as the “urban stream syndrome.” Included among these changes is a decrease in riparian tree canopy cover, which has important consequences for the ecology of headwater streams. However, the effects of urbanization on riparian forests may vary geographically. In regions where riparian trees were not historically dense, or where riparian forest was significantly affected by previous land uses, urbanization has the potential to increase riparian forest cover by increasing stream flows, introducing exotic species, and alleviating pressures that previously limited tree regeneration. This study examines changes in riparian tree canopy and land cover in the 85-square-km Arcade Creek watershed near Sacramento, California. Streams in this area were naturally intermittent due to the Mediterranean climate, and the landscape was heavily impacted by agriculture and grazing before urbanization. We used aerial imagery from 1937, 1984, and 2014 to quantify changes in land cover, as well as changes in riparian tree canopy area, width, and density. We also examined changes in watershed hydrology using stream gage data, topographic maps, and field observations, and sampled riparian woody vegetation at nineteen sites across the stream network. Land cover in the Arcade Creek watershed shifted almost entirely from pasture and crops to urban development between 1937 and 2014. During the same time, forested area within 50 m of streams increased by 38 percent, and the median width of riparian tree canopy more than doubled.
