This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida's climate has been and continues to be one of its most important assets. It has enabled the growth of many major industries, including tourism and agriculture, which now rank at the top of Florida's diverse economic activities. Our state's climate enables its native ecosystems to flourish and attract citizens from around the world. The dependencies of Florida's society and ecosystems on climate are widely recognized and generally taken for granted. However, we now know that climate around the world is changing. Questions arise about whether or not Florida's climate is changing, how rapidly these changes might occur, and how Florida may adapt to anticipated changes and help mitigate the rates of change. This book provides a thorough review of the current state of research on Florida's climate, including physical climate benchmarks; climate prediction, projection, and attribution; and the impacts of climate and climate change on the people and natural resources of Florida. The editors have gathered more than 90 researchers at universities across the state and beyond to address important topics such as sea level rise, water resources, and how climate affects various sectors, including energy, agriculture, forestry, tourism, and insurance. This volume offers accessible, accurate information for students, policymakers, and the general public. About the Editors: Eric P. Chassignet is a professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science and director of the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies at Florida State University. James W. Book Florida s Council of 100 and the Future of Water Supply Management in Florida

Download or read book Florida s Council of 100 and the Future of Water Supply Management in Florida written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 2003, the Florida Council of 100 published its Water Management Task Force report, Improving Florida's Water Supply Management Structure. The report has stimulated lively debate regarding the adequacy of its findings and the substance of its recommendations. The focal point for much of the debate pertains to task force arguments for eliminating the "local sources first" policy that currently governs water supply development in Florida. The task force would replace the "local sources first" policy with one that favors transporting water from non-local sources when doing so would minimize the costs of water supply development. The report emphasizes that transfers of water from non-local sources would be recommended only when doing so would not harm the environment and that transfers of water from non-local sources would be recommended only after the water needs of the sending community had been met.

Book Growth Management in Florida

Download or read book Growth Management in Florida written by Timothy S.Chapin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its historical significance and its state-mandated comprehensive planning approach, the Florida growth management experiment has received only piecemeal attention from researchers. Drawing together contributions from national experts on land use planning and growth management, this volume assesses the outcomes of Florida‘s approach for managing growth. As Florida‘s approach is the most detailed system for managing growth in the United States, this book will be of great value to planners. The strengths and weaknesses of the state‘s approach are identified, providing insights into how to manage land use change in a state continuously inundated by growth. In evaluating the successes and failures of the Florida approach, planners and policy makers will gain insights into how to successfully implement growth management policies at both the state and local level.

Book The Economics of Everglades Restoration

Download or read book The Economics of Everglades Restoration written by Richard Weisskoff and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The book provides valuable contributions on three related fronts: It places past and current debates on ecosystem restoration of the Everglades in a clear systems context that acknowledges feedback between ecosystem quality and economic growth; shows for the case of the Everglades that good intentions of providing generous financial support for restoration may lead to undesired effects that actually run counter to the original goal; and demonstrates the use of regional modeling tools to develop consistent baseline forecasts and alternative scenarios.' - Matthias Ruth, University of Maryland, College Park, US The restoration of the Florida Everglades, the largest ecosystem restoration project in the world, is now underway. Missing from the original plan, however, is a study of the region's cities and farms and the economic impact their growth will make on this already endangered ecosystem. This book provides that analysis.
