Book The Handbook of Fatigue Management in Transportation

Download or read book The Handbook of Fatigue Management in Transportation written by Christina M. Rudin-Brown and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-08-02 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of transportation, fatigue is a silent killer that can affect us all. Understanding fatigue, including how to manage it to minimize safety risk, is of great importance. However, while it is one thing to recognize that fatigue is a critical safety issue, it is quite another to set up a successful, scientifically informed fatigue risk management programme. This book is here to help. It has been carefully designed as a comprehensive reference point, bringing together international expertise from leaders in fatigue science, and showcasing valuable insights from transportation industry practitioners. The 40 authored chapters are divided into six sections, to better understand fatigue science, the consequences of fatigue in transportation, contributors to fatigue, managing fatigue and promoting alertness, real world case studies of fatigue management in practice, and future perspectives. While it is possible to read each chapter in isolation, most will be gained by reading the book as a whole. Each chapter starts with an abstract overview and concludes with summary bullet points, creating a handy "quick check" for key points. This accessible text is for those who are interested in supporting alert and safe transportation operations. It is suitable for professionals, transport managers, government advisors, policy makers, students, academics, and anyone who wants to learn more. All transport modes (road, rail, maritime and aviation) are considered. For anyone waking up to the complex challenge of fatigue management, this handbook is a must.

Book excerpt: This report contains the presentations given at the Fatigue in Transportation Workshop held in Ottawa, 15-16 October 1998. The workshop was organized by the Transportation Development Centre and co-sponsored by the Road Safety Directorate of Transport Canada, the Canada Safety Council, and the Railway Association of Canada. The presentations cover a broad range of issues related to fatigue in all transportation modes. Summaries are provided in both official languages. The titles of the presentations are as follows: The evidence that fatigue causes accidents (Hill, M); Impediments to progress in fatigue (Vincent, A); Putting the scientific knowledge into practice (Vespa, S); Sleep and circadian impacts on performance (Boivin, DB); Jetlag, gamma activity, and managing pilot fatigue (Weinberg, H, Jantzen, KJ, Cheyne, D, Carson, P, Joly, R and Vincent, A); Determining the causal role of fatigue in accident investigations (Donati, L); Fatigue in maintenance operations (O'Rourke, BM); Trucking industry view of hours-of-service regulations and fatigue management (Cooper, G); Review of fatigue management concepts and strategies (Heslegrave, RJ); Fatigue management program for Alberta's trucking industry (Kranenburg, L); U.S. DOT initiatives for reducing fatigue incidence in road transport (Carroll, RJ); Recent advances in altertness applications in the transportation industry (Lehrer, A); Countermeasures : facts and strategies (Lipsitz, JJ); Organized labour's role in fatigue risk reduction (Anderson, D and Hucker, TG); The impact of extended crewing periods in ship operations (Murdock, P); Fatigue in Canadian coast guard operations (Cameron, B); Pilot fatigue (Woods, J); Effects of 12-hour rotating work schedules on the health and safety of refinery operators (Bourdouxhe, MA, Granger, D, Baril, RH, Levy, M, Massicotte, PR, Lemay, FL, Queinnec, Y and Guertin, SC).

Book Best Practices Compendium of Fatigue Countermeasures in Transport Operations

Download or read book Best Practices Compendium of Fatigue Countermeasures in Transport Operations written by Diane B. Boivin and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium critically evaluates research findings related to fatigue countermeasures applicable to transport operations. It reviews the strategies used to manage work-related fatigue in trucking, marine, aviation, and rail industries and makes recommendations for improved management and future research. The report is divided into the following sections: description of the problem of fatigue in multimoda transport operations; descriptions of the physiological basis of operator fatigue; critical evaluation of various work and rest schedules, as per regulations, in transport operations; critical evaluation of different countermeasures; future research. The research responds to one of the recommendations that emerged from the Proceedings of the fatigue in transportation workshop: multimodal issues and solutions (TP 13375).

Book Traffic and Transport Psychology

Download or read book Traffic and Transport Psychology written by Talib Rothengatter and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-09-08 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gives an overview of the trends in Traffic and Transport Psychology. It reflects the considerable development of the most important factors for driving a road vehicle, and the variety of international research approaches. The first part contains basic approaches and integrated models as well as general theories and their implementation into Traffic and Transport Psychology. The second part deals with the driver, especially cognition, performance, social and differential effects and impairment. Important aspects are treated, such as speed perception, reaction times, interaction, risk acceptance, aggression and gender differences. Special chapters refer to performance and fatigue. The third part focuses on safety, driver support, selection and influencing drivers by enforcement, training and programs for the rehabilitation of traffic offenders. Classic ergonomic methods are discussed as well as modern telematic devices, or trends regarding driver-assessment. In the last part, current developments are presented in relation to better mobility and the protection of the environment. Questions are asked, such as whether we could reduce the use of cars, how travel behaviour can be modified or to what extent the use of alternatives to motor vehicles benefits safety as well as the environment. This work is not only important for psychologists. It should be read by all transport professionals interested in the application of psychology to traffic.

Book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue Long Term Health and Highway Safety

Download or read book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue Long Term Health and Highway Safety written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.
