The construct of the text is based on the relationship between stress theory and and managerial problems. Emphasis moves from the individual to role, to group to organization to culture factors as levels of analysis. Frames of reference include psychological, social psychological, and sociological aspects. Stress is related to the relationship between uncertainty, the importance of an outcome, and an individual's ability to influence the outcome. An individual copes with stress by avoidance, defense mechanisms, or learning. Level of activation is considered as the theoretical construct. Managerial problems of delegation, outcome of events, and uncertainty are considered under style, control, or change. Five themes are evident: 1) stress is related to degree of coercion and control perceived; 2) stress is associated with mismatch, imbalance, and discontinuity; 3) stress is related to hierarchy and power; 4) stress is predominantately evident in specialists; 5) stress results in avoidance and defense mechanisms; 6) stress is a problem.
