Book Innovation in High Technology SMEs

Download or read book Innovation in High Technology SMEs written by Shobha S. Das and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have examined innovation by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), identified factors that contribute to innovation, and concluded that SMEs tend to be innovative and innovation improves performance. Do these findings hold for high-technology SMEs that are located in a newly industrialized economy? Drawing on the resource-based view of the firm, and literature from entrepreneurship and innovation studies, we develop and test hypotheses using quantitative data collected from a survey. While the results of the study generally support prior research conclusions, there is a surprising finding: top management experience negatively moderates the effect of innovation on performance. Qualitative data from follow-up interviews with CEOs of SMEs helped us understand this finding.

Book Productivity and Innovation in SMEs

Download or read book Productivity and Innovation in SMEs written by Azad Bali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the determining factors behind productivity and innovation amongst Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Singapore, and within the context of South East Asia, in order to offer recommendations for increasing productivity and aiding economic growth. SME firms are an influential driver of economic growth in advanced world economies like the USA, Germany, Japan and South Korea. Throughout the 2000s, Singapore experienced a decline in economic growth which was linked to decreasing productivity in its SMEs. The decline triggered a transformational policy by a Government intent on forging a ‘high skill–high productivity’ future. Given substantial evidence that low productivity growth occurred in sectors where immigrants dominated the workforce, the seeds of recovery focused on improving productivity and innovation amongst SMEs in those sectors. Hence, this book investigates the factors determining productivity amongst SMEs across the manufacturing sector. It utilises personal interviews with global experts and CEOs, combined with primary data collected from a major international Delphi survey, and interviews with 215 SME owners and managers in Singapore. This data helps us to better understand how these productivity-enhancing factors can be used to increase performance amongst SMEs. By investigating the nature and process of total factor productivity in Singapore’s SMEs, this book tells the policy story behind the revolution. To provide a comparative analysis, Singapore’s story is placed within a South East Asian context. The unfolding narrative contains important lessons for policy makers and industry globally, as they assess the strategic choices available to them for improving productivity and innovation. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of innovation and productivity, as well as economic development officers, government policy advisors, SME business managers and sustainable businesses.

These enterprises contribute to economy by providing employment to large number of people and also significantly to growth and GDP of an economy. Knowledge has become important factor of success and has replaced old factors like labor and capital. In order to survive in the globalized market, small and medium enterprises use knowledge to innovate. But there are some small and medium enterprises in India that remain non-innovative. Non-innovative small and medium enterprises are not able to recognize business environmental factors. As a result of which they fail to survive and eventually perish. The research study explores few innovative small and medium enterprises from the selected sector i.e. information technology and pharmaceutical sector. The present study presents few case studies of small and medium enterprises in information technology and pharmaceutical sector in India. These case studies look at the background information, management of innovation, factors that influence innovation, resources of innovation that affect implementation of innovative practices in SMEs. Some enterprises are start-ups which have been started by first time entrepreneurs but some are decade old companies which have grown with time. The factors that influenced the innovation are opportunities, new business proposition, high cost of existing product, aim to have more market share or to be the market leader or to provide affordable medicine to everybody. Book Promoting Innovation In New Ventures And Small And Medium sized Enterprises

Download or read book Promoting Innovation In New Ventures And Small And Medium sized Enterprises written by Joe Tidd and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the pioneering work scholars such as Joseph Schumpeter and Peter Drucker, the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship have evolved to become two separate and distinct disciplines. Schumpeter 1 focused on the contributions of entrepreneurial startups and smaller firms, whereas Schumpeter 2 emphasized the role of formal research, development and industrial innovation in larger firms. Unfortunately, the study and practice of each field has suffered as a result: entrepreneurship has become preoccupied with individual entrepreneurs and small business creation, and innovation is dominated by corporate R&D and new product development.Promoting Innovation in New Ventures and Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) aims to bridge these two fields by examining innovation in new ventures and SMEs. This book identifies themes which can reunite the study and practice of entrepreneurship and innovation by examining a potentially bridging phenomenon. The focus here is on high growth, innovative SMEs, and the interactions between SMEs and larger organizations, private and public. It is organized around three overlapping themes: SME innovation performance, practices and networks.

Book Leverage Innovation Capability

Download or read book Leverage Innovation Capability written by Qingrui Xu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation is widely recognized as a major source of modern productivity growth. Indeed, it is seen as constituting a central process of economic advancement in industrialized countries. Despite this, a considerable gap still exists in knowledge and technological capability between industrialized countries and the more dynamic developing countries such as China. Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are a major contributor to China's economy and SME's contribution to China's GDP is close to 60%.This book studies the strategy and mechanism of leveraging innovation capability in China's SMEs by applying the theory of Total Innovation Management (TIM), which is the new paradigm of managing innovation in enterprises developed by the Research Center for "Innovation and Development" (shortly RCID) of Zhejiang University, China. According to Eric von Hippel, MIT, RCID is the Top 10 Innovation Management research institutes in the world.Leverage Innovation Capability probes the strategy and mechanism of leverage the innovation capability in the firm, especially in China's SMEs. It analyzes how the SMEs utilize all the innovation elements in the firm, including Strategy innovation, Tech innovation, marketing innovation, organization innovation, culture innovation, innovation networking, learning and knowledge management, high involvement innovation, cooperation innovation, etc. to leverage innovation capability.

Book Intellectual Property Innovation and Management in Emerging Economies

Download or read book Intellectual Property Innovation and Management in Emerging Economies written by Ruth Taplin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that intellectual property (IP) management development and innovation are fundamental to economic development , especially in newly emerging economies which often hold vast reserves of natural resources and human knowledge that remain unprotected. It sheds light on countries that are gradually realising this situation, with examples from many parts of the world, including Eastern Europe, Africa and especially Asia including India, where a great deal is being made of innovation and intellectual property to stimulate economic growth. These case studies are seen within the theoretical context of the future of cross-border IP which is slowly becoming a reality. Specific examples go beyond the patent prosecution highway, to which China has also recently signed up, and India’s development of generic drugs at lower costs. Experts in the field including practising IP lawyers explain and criticise current and new models being tested in emerging economies concerning IPR. Original case studies of hitherto little understood breaches of African trademarks by the US and Japan, and patenting mistakes in relation to little known Indian forest plants all damage emerging economies and their native people's lives. While proper implementation of IP laws by emerging economies themselves can lead to positive outcomes for all involved, the key is an independent judiciary coupled by thoughtful and thoroughly understood implementation of IP laws within the context of cross border IP. The book shows through models how different emerging economies are at various levels of developing their IPR and what paths they are taking to do this. Finally, it provides a comprehensive assessment of the ways in which innovation, protection and enforcement of IP laws can help newly emerging economies achieve economic growth without destroying natural and human resources, while moving ahead from the current global financial crisis.

Book Fiscal Policy and Institutional Renovation in Support of Innovative Country Building

Download or read book Fiscal Policy and Institutional Renovation in Support of Innovative Country Building written by Jia Kang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-06 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the onset of the twelfth Five-Year Plan, China has been at the forefront as an innovative nation based on a carefully designed strategy. Despite this, it can be argued that the Chinese government requires a series of more effective and systematic fiscal and taxation policies. This book analyses the status quo and possible optimization of China’s fiscal and taxation policies. By drawing comparisons with other countries, as well as a practical investigation into the lessons China has drawn from elsewhere, the author shows how a nation should make steadily growing and optimized financial investments in science and technology in order to foster the optimum environment for innovation. It is shown that institutional innovation should be a systematic project which involves top-level design and top-down leadership. This volume will be a useful reference for students, scholars, and policy makes who are interested in financial policy.

Book Technology Transfer in Singapore

Download or read book Technology Transfer in Singapore written by Audrey Yap and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst Singapore's economic recovery is beginning to gather pace in 2018 after the economic challenges thrown up in the last couple of years, Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are responding by pushing for top line growth through investing in productivity and technology innovation as well as international expansion, aided by the national government's various policies, grants and initiatives. The rationale behind the focus on SMEs is clear. The Department of Statistics reported that there are currently about 220,100 enterprises in Singapore, out of which, 99% are made of SMEs. These SMEs contribute S$196.8 billion in gross value added (GVA) to the economy and in fact have been generating at least 50% GVA for the past 5 years. SMEs also employ 65% of all workers, ensuring that the unemployment rate of 2.1% and per capita GDP of S$53,000 makes Singapore one of the strongest economies in the world despite its size.

Book Management Innovation Radical Innovation and Business Performance

Download or read book Management Innovation Radical Innovation and Business Performance written by Faridah Mustaffa Bakry and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the strategy, innovation, and knowledge-based literatures, the notion that SMEs can enhance their innovation ability by developing knowledge resources has become important for achieving competitive advantage and long-term survival. Building upon theoretical work on the knowledge-based view and innovation management literature, this research examines how the management innovation related to radical innovation and how knowledge resources and management innovation influences on business practices and these effects differ across context of an economy. The conceptual model was developed and aims to answer three important questions. RQ1: What is the relationship between management innovation and radical innovation? RQ2: How does this relationship mediate between the development of company resources and business performance? RQ3: What is the impact of the economic environment (developed vs. developing economy) on the relationships between resources, management innovation, radical innovation and performance? This study examines the four knowledge resources: humanware (employees' knowledge and learning), techware (technological skills and knowledge), infoware (information management) and orgware (organization's values and norms) that impact a firm's management innovation and radical innovation and affects the success of SMEs. The model is tested with data collected from 123 British high technology SMEs and 133 Malaysian high technology SMEs. The empirical result for the UK dataset shows that humanware and techware contributed to the development of management innovation. The result specified that management innovation is an antecedent to radical innovation. The results also found that the indirect effects of infoware and orgware on performance occur through management innovation. The Malaysian dataset shows that techware and orgware are antecedents for the management innovation, which in turn are antecedents to radical innovation and business performance. Humanware and infoware have an indirect impact on business performance by facilitating management innovation that in turn fosters business performance. The results show that management innovation is important for a developed country, meanwhile for a developing country radical innovation is important. The evidence shows that management innovation is the mediator for the developed country and not for the developing country. Therefore, this finding concludes that the innovation model in the developed country is not applicable for the developing country. This research has noteworthy implications for both researchers and practitioners by (1) Providing guidelines for high-technology SME's in developed and developing countries about knowledge resources, management innovation, radical innovation and firms' business performance, (2) The innovation literature needs to consider empirically how knowledge resources enhance radical innovation and performance when management innovation is implemented and (3) Indicating that the most important manifestation of the different knowledge resources leads to the success of management innovation for SME success in the high - technology industry. Limitations in current research may create avenues for future research in terms of number of countries, companies, methodologies, innovation types and resources.

Book Strategic Business Development Using Innovative Technology

Download or read book Strategic Business Development Using Innovative Technology written by Pratik Shailesh Waghela and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in New Zealand are subject to immense global competition from low cost manufacturers in the developing countries. Therefore, to stay competitive, SMEs in New Zealand need to continually innovate in a strategic manner. However, these SMEs face a number of barriers that hinder their innovative capability which in turn limits their competitiveness. This research study identified a small manufacturing company, named Felton Industries Ltd, which has proven to be innovative and strategic. As a result it has managed to stay competitive amongst vast global and local competitive pressures. One outcome of such innovative thinking was the development of a novel leak testing system to replace the traditional one. The purpose of the implementation was to strategically improve business. This research study used findings from the literature along with participative action research to identify the drivers and barriers of innovation along with studying about Felton's strategic approach to business development. The researcher was embedded into the organisation with the responsibility of developing the new leak testing system according to the strategic goals developed by Felton. This situation allowed the researcher to gain an insider's view about the factors mentioned above. Information was collected through the researcher's personal observations, interactions with the staff and interviews with the general manager. This research study resulted in the development of a semi-automated leak testing system that satisfied Felton's strategic goals. It also resulted in the identification of the structured strategic approach to business development practised by Felton. The barriers to innovation were identified as lack of financial resources and lack of active technology scanning. The drivers of innovation were identified as strategic approach to business development, participative and decentralised leadership, organic company culture and effective knowledge management. These factors collectively have helped Felton succeed in a highly competitive market.
