Book Management of Dredged Material from Inland Waterways

Download or read book Management of Dredged Material from Inland Waterways written by Permanent International Association of Navigation of Navigation Congresses. Permanent Technical Committee I. Working Group 7 and published by PIANC. This book was released on 1990 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides guidelines for the sustainable development of recreational navigation infrastructure (RNI). There are multiple potential benefits of recreational navigation infrastructure, but it is critical for sustainable development that these opportunities become actual benefits. This report provides guidelines for a design process and illustrates project features that can achieve this goal. It also outlines the benefits that sustainable RNI provide, as an economic engine with social and environmental benefits, in sustainable tourism, in large infrastructure projects, in urban waterfront projects, and as part of broad conservation strategies.

Book Evaluating Environmental Effects of Dredged Material Management Alternatives

Download or read book Evaluating Environmental Effects of Dredged Material Management Alternatives written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is intended to serve as a consistent "roadmap" for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency personnel in evaluating the environmental acceptability of dredged amterial management alternatives. Specifically, its major objectives are to provide: A general technical framwork for evaluating the environmental acceptability of dredged material management, alternatives (open-water disposal, confined (diked) disposal, and beneficial uses). Additional technical guidance to augment present implementation and testing manuals for addressing the environmental acceptability of available management options for the discharge of dredged material in both ope water and confined sites. Enhanced consistency and coordination in USAC/EPA decision making in accordance with Federal environmantl statutes regulating dredged material management.

Book Dredging Operations Technical Support Program General Decisionmaking Framework for Management of Dredged Material Example Application to Commencement Bay Washington

Download or read book Dredging Operations Technical Support Program General Decisionmaking Framework for Management of Dredged Material Example Application to Commencement Bay Washington written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navigable waterways of the United States have a vital role in the Nation's economic growth. The US Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for the dredging and disposal of large volumes of sediment each year. Dredging is a process by which sediments are removed from the bottom of streams, rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, transported via ship, barge, or pipeline, and discharged to land or water. The presence of contamination in some locations has generated concern that dredged material disposal may adversely affect water quality and aquatic organisms or terrestrial organisms. Since many of the waterways are located in industrial and urban areas, some sediments may be highly contaminated with hazardous materials. A general decisionmaking framework based on the results of technically sound tests protocols is described. The decision making framework includes consideration of sediment chemistry, physical chemistry of disposal site environments, and biological effects of sediment contaminants, as well as comparison of test results from sediments to be dredged with test results from reference sediments and with established criteria. The framework provides the basis for selection of the environmentally preferable disposal alternative and for identification of potentially appropriate control measures to minimize problems associated with the presence of contaminants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authoritative, up-to-date guide to dredging theory and practice. From selecting the right equipment, to evaluating environmental impact, to bidding on a project, Handbook of Dredging Engineering, Second Edition, is the last word on modern hydraulic dredging. Edited by John B. Herbich, with contributions by well-know experts in the field, the Handbook examines basic fluid mechanics; dredge pumps; dredging equipment; sediment; pipeline transport of solids; dredging methods; disposal and placement of dredged material; numerical models for predicting the fate of dredged material placed in open water; environmental effects of dredging activities; instrumentation and automation; and project planning. This vital new edition covers major advances made over the last seven years. Three chapters are new to this edition: numerical models for predicting the fate of dredged material...subaqueous capping of contaminated sediment...and removal of contaminated sediments by dredging, with illustrative case studies.
