Book excerpt: In 1984 while bored at work, I coined the name Management by Confusion'. Lack of the ability of management to see or figure out problems became apparent. A friend Pete' Peterson and I spent about three month putting together a board game that chronicled the adventure of a person through the company ladder to the top. No game company wanted it, so the idea was scrapped, my kids and I still play it. After years of thinking about it, I decided to begin writing down the new story of Management by Confusion. Around 1995, I was scribbling notes and situations I thought were funny. In 1999, I finally purchased a decent computer, or should I say I actually tried to learn how to use it. My years in school didn't pay off in English, so when I figured out that Microsoft word could find most of my errors I was ecstatic. By 2002, book one or part one was finished and turned down for being to short. Therefore, this time I wasn't going to give up, and began hammering out book two or part two. It was finished in late 2004, and I began an insane task of editing it, having eight people read it and find errors. I figured it was done then I let the wife read it and she found 100 more, ARGH!! Would it never end? I decided that in February 2006 it was time so here it is. Management by Confusion is a fast paced romp about six months in the life of a brewery owner and his best friend the chief financial officer. The owner, Jim loves making money and sharing it with all the employees, and the CFO, Frank can't find enough places to hide the extra money from the IRS. The crazy adventures occur around them as they purchase a research and develop company that is losing money, as a write off. To Frank's amazement the company turns around in just one month. Management by Confusion is a Comedy/ Sci-fi/ Fantasy/ Adventure story that bridges weird to insane. It is written so anyone could read it only because I don't have a ten million word vocabulary like some writers. So sit down, relax, and read a story that will make you laugh and wonder, where did he come up with that. I swear it's the plastic fumes, because I have never done drugs, well beer, why do you think I used a brewery in the story. LOL.

Book excerpt: How do you react when you feel confused--when those butterflies in your stomach signal something is off, but you're not clear exactly what or why? Do you view it as a problem or personal failure? Do you look for someone else to blame? Do you retreat to your desk, put your head down, and wait for the storm to pass? Chances are at some point you've reacted in all these ways, but none of them resolved the problem. The truth is that confusion is your opportunity-to learn from experience, improve communication, processes, and innovative problem-solving. And when you tweak your mindset to view it that way, you begin the creative process of finding your own and your organization's competitive edge. Power of Confusion shows you how. Based on the wisdom gained from more than forty years of management consulting to companies large and small, Power of Confusion offers essential insights on how to resolve crippling workplace confusion. Through vivid, real-life examples drawn from industries from banking to hotel management, Martin Stankard identifies the seven most damaging problems cause by career and workplace confusion and examines the best (and worst) practices for resolving them. With humor and empathy, Stankard illustrates classic management errors and describes simple but powerful fixes. In addition, the book's appendices provide rich details on how and when to deploy analytical tools, from skills assessment, questioning, root-cause and inter-relationship analysis, to navigating your career and forming effective process improvement teams. Here are some insights you will gain into solving confusing business problems: How do you find work you love -- rather than just work you are good at? What seven roles-including "plate breaker" help teams succeed? Why is magic not a management method? Why is committing random acts of improvement here and there a dead end while creating a management system for sustaining improvement yields high performance? In a business world where change is the only constant, Power of Confusion is your playbook for deploying proven strategies and tools to transform each instance of workplace dysfunction into your opportunity for learning and growth.
