Download or read book Abundance Indices of Beluga in James Bay and Eastern Hudson Bay in Summer 2004 written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes & presents results from aerial systematic line transect surveys of beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas, conducted in James Bay & eastern Hudson Bay from 7 August to 1 September 2001, and from coastal surveys conducted while in transit to the transect lines. Beluga abundance is estimated using a line transect method. The final section discusses such issues as population trends, limitations of the survey data, and problems in conducting the survey.

Book Update to the Proportion of Eastern Hudson Bay Beluga Harvested and Implications for Harvest Allocations in Nunavik

Download or read book Update to the Proportion of Eastern Hudson Bay Beluga Harvested and Implications for Harvest Allocations in Nunavik written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated information indicated that the proportion of EHB beluga whales taken in the Ungava Bay spring hunt declined from the 10% used in the plan to 8.8%, while the proportion in the Hudson Strait spring hunt increased from the 10% used in the plan to 11.7%, and from 20% to 23.6% in the Hudson Strait fall hunt (Tables 1 and 2). [...] If the 2016 harvest is 98 whales, and the seasonal pattern is the same as in 2014 and 2015, then the estimated total number of EHB belugas harvested by Sanikiluaq hunters would be (4.7 + 2.3) = 7 animals over the life of the 2014-2017 management plan, not the 18 animals as originally assumed. [...] Estimated seasonal breakdown of reported beluga harvest from Sanikiluaq, assuming that the distribution of harvest effort is the same as the proportion of sample kits returned by hunters, and the estimated total number of belugas harvested. [...] Based on the reported 2014 and 2015 harvests and assuming that the seasonal distribution of the overall harvest is the same as the distribution of the skin sampling program, then 83% of the animals are harvested between April 1 to June 30 harvests, and 2.8% of these are EHB beluga whales. [...] Adding in the estimated 6 EHB beluga whales removed in 2014-2015 in Sanikiluaq, results in removal estimates of 8 to 16 EHB belugas over the life of the plan (Tables 5 and 6).

Book Addis Ababa Principles and Guidelines for the Sustainable Use of Biodiversity

Download or read book Addis Ababa Principles and Guidelines for the Sustainable Use of Biodiversity written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Addis Ababa principles and guidelines for the sustainable use of biodiversity provide a framework for assisting governments, indigenous and local communities, resource managers, the private sector and other stakeholders, about how to ensure that their uses of biological diversity will not lead to its long-term decline. The practical principles in most instances apply to both consumptive and non-consumptive uses of biodiversity components. They take into account requirements related to policies, laws, and regulations; management of biological diversity; socio-economic conditions; and information, research, and education.

Book Approaches to Understanding the Cumulative Effects of Stressors on Marine Mammals

Download or read book Approaches to Understanding the Cumulative Effects of Stressors on Marine Mammals written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine mammals face a large array of stressors, including loss of habitat, chemical and noise pollution, and bycatch in fishing, which alone kills hundreds of thousands of marine mammals per year globally. To discern the factors contributing to population trends, scientists must consider the full complement of threats faced by marine mammals. Once populations or ecosystems are found to be at risk of adverse impacts, it is critical to decide which combination of stressors to reduce to bring the population or ecosystem into a more favorable state. Assessing all stressors facing a marine mammal population also provides the environmental context for evaluating whether an additional activity could threaten it. Approaches to Understanding the Cumulative Effects of Stressors on Marine Mammals builds upon previous reports to assess current methodologies used for evaluating cumulative effects and identify new approaches that could improve these assessments. This review focuses on ways to quantify exposure-related changes in the behavior, health, or body condition of individual marine mammals and makes recommendations for future research initiatives.

Download or read book Polar Bears written by IUCN/SSC Polar Bear Specialist Group. Working Meeting and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2006 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings provide an overview of the ongoing research and management activities on polar bears in the circumpolar arctic. Together with the previous 13 proceedings, they provide an historic record of international efforts in protecting, studying and managing polar bears. With recent documentation of how warmer arctic climate might affect the sea ice habitat of polar bears, the predictions of even warmer climate in the next decades, and documentation of effects on polar bears subpopulations, an evaluation of the red list status of polar bear subpopulations was followed by an increased conservation designation of vulnerable. In the complexity of possible interactions between climate change, local harvest, and in some areas high levels of pollutants, an increased level of international cooperation was advocated.
